A vaccuum cleaner. I see them lined up in the store for $60 to $600, what kind of performance/price curve is there? I only have a single bedroom apartment so I'm not trying to clean the louve or anything like that.

I'm sure someone will say Dyson rules, but their not cheap. You could go to a vacuum repair center and get a used Oreck XL. You can't kill those things.

I hear a lot of people swear by dysons, but spending $500 for a vacuum? It has no track record as to how long they will last, and honestly, they don't seem to be built to last for 20 years like other vacuum brands...

X2 for an oreck XL. They are very lightweight, very durable, very simple, and can be had on ebay for like $100 used.

We bought a cheap one from Amazon almost 5 years ago and it's still kicking. A Dyson is great, but there is a small ROI, IMHO. I could spend $100 and get 80% of the performance of a Dyson, that's good enough for me.

My mother in law loves Electrolux... she had hers from when she was married and it only recently started to suck less. My wife and her two sisters all pitched in to buy her a new one... but I dont get it. It's a vacuum cleaner, why did it cost $900?

It's just a vacuum, right?

I bought a vacuum from Walmart for $30 a while back (the cheapest one they had, it was either a Hoover or a Dirt Devil) and it worked fine. The thing was loud though. I had to sell it though because my new apt has hardwood floors.

I have a Miele. Don't know if you can get them outised Europe but they are very good. Coal and HEPA filter plus controls on the hose. 1200W.

[edit] Okay turns out they are very much available in the US. Different model names though.

Unless you have pets, get a cheapo vaccuum. Upgrade as needed.

I love my Dyson, but if I didn't have four housecats, I'd never spend that kind of money on a vac. Since I do, it's worth every penny.

I just bought a Eureka HEPA vacuum cleaner for about $100, works great. Why would somone spend $500-$900 on a frigging vacuum cleaner?

We picked one of these up from Sears over the weekend for $200. Granted, it's only been a few days, but we love it so far. I can't believe all the crap that came up out of the carpet.

If you can't kill them, why are they at the repair center? ;)

I have a Dirt Devil HEPA, works great, but replacement belts are $$$ and hard to find. It uses a cogged belt. :|

After reading the responses it is clear that we need benchmarks. I think we need Anandtech/Householdcleaning.

Seriously, why don't we see objective/scientific reviews on stuff like vacuum cleaners?
Hmm, Maybe there is,Google to the rescue! Nope every site I found was very subjective reviews.

I never knew people cares so much abotu vaccums.

I second the motion for a stardardized set of benchmarks and objective reviews for household appliances.

Yeah I also agree if I didn't have pets I would never had bought a Dyson. But the thing is great and I've had it for 3 years now.

On another note, I have lived in my house (duplex) for almost 2 years now and have NEVER heard my nieghbors vacuum ever! Ewww!
