My trusty 2x2x6 has finally failed me, and I'm looking to replace it on the cheap. What's a good, capable CDRW drive I can pick up at Best Buy :)P) or CompUSA tonight? As I'm not looking to spend much money, and I'm coming from a 2x, speed is no big deal. Anything 4x or faster and I'm happy. I just want to make sure I get a drive with a decent lifespan and all those special capabilities I need for CloneCD, etc. Well?

I'd reccomend the AOpen 1232A or 1232Pro.

Both awesome drives with great prices.

Check out the review here at CD-R labs.

it might be slightly out of your price range, but the Plextor 12/10/32 is one sweeet CD-RW.

The lite-on 12X10X32X is also a great device for it's price. Some here are using it and are very happy with it, or so it seems.

another vote for the AOpen (= Ricoh 7120a and 7125a respectively)...

otherwise, i couldn't help noticing the incredible inexpensiveness of the LG 12x/8x/32x w/ 8MB buffer drives...

they're possibly the cheapest 12x drives on the market, and coem w/ a hefty 8mb buffer...and i've heard no problems, only praise, about them.

note that the AOpen/Ricoh 7120a can be firmware hacked to a 7125a (the only difference being justlink) effortlessly...i did it.

the lite-on is another good choice.

I got a TEAC 12x10x32 from CompUSA for $100 (after rebate :p). Working on copying the first disc of Myst III now. :D

Now, I was playing with Nero earlier, and it tells me that this drive has BURN-Proof. There's no way this cheapo drive has that, is there? What's Nero smoking?

The TEAC 12x10x32 drives DO have Burnproof. Not only have various people in the Hot Deals section confirmed this, but I called and asked TEAC themselves. Just make sure your drive model number shows a "B" at the end on the actual drive itself.

If it's an 512E-0"B" model you have burnproof.
This is NOT a CHEAP drive.
Teac is one of the top drives out there.
You made a wise choice.
Congratulations.
This drive is also supported by CloneCD.

Uh oh. 12x10x32, BURN-Proof, $100? This drive is seriously starting to scare me. I get the feeling something evil is readying itself to crush my spirit.

[edit] WOW. Neat pick, from CompUSA no less. Aces! :D Thanks GH.
