so I'm junking a car with a full tank...

Save the car to idle it during Earth day and then drain the oil into the nearby stormgutter. Also, don't forget to junk the car in the middle of some forest.

depending on the car, if you can rig up the fuel line from the engine bay into some container you can just turn the key to ignition and the fuel pump will try to prime itself indefinitely until it runs out.

How does one syphon gas ? 😀 Are there cheap tools at autozone or something ? I didn't say I had a plan... just wondering if it was worth the effort.

Sure, keep the gas. I just did the same thing with a suburban that has a 35 gallon tank that had just been filled before the accident. If the vehicle is fuel injected make it easy on yourself and just disconnect the fuel line from the engine, add a piece of hose to get it to the gas cans, and then jumper the fuel pump to empty the tank with ease. If carbureted then simply use the old garden hose method, which is what I did since I was in a hurry and needed the gas pronto.

Good luck.

P.S. If you have to use the siphon method...

1)grab a hose and a large bucket/container.
2)stick one end of the hose into the gas tank as far as it will go
3)stand up (with your head higher than the gas tank...) and suck on the other end of the hose until the gas is near your mouth... try not to get any of that crap in your mouth.
4)take the end of the hose that is in your mouth out while plugging the end of it up with your finger
5)set your container on the ground (lower than your gas tank) and point the hose into it.
6)let go of the plugged up end of the hose and it should start to drain the tank.

Some tanks have somehting in the neck that won't let a hose go down, but if you can fit a hose about 3/4" just stuff it in there, and get an empty gas can. Than just suck on the hose till gas is just about to your mouth(Very possible to suck it into your mouth(not that I'd know🙂) and than stick the end of the hose into your gas can, and let it pour out

With alot of tanks, you can disconnect the vent tube and drain alot of it that way,
No offense but exactly how does this work? The vent tube is on the top with a one way valve in it to prevent gas from COMING OUT. It only allows air to enter the tank to allow for proper function. Now there is another vent tube that usually goes to the charcoal canister the works to let fumes out due to expansion, but once again it is on the top and has no tube going into the fuel itself so it would be rather hard to use it to drain the fuel. If there is a special way to doe this please let me know.

take a drill with a metal bit, bore a hole directly into the tank ..put a pan underneath to reap the rewards 😀

On some of the older cars that I've climbed under, the tube ends up about half way down. I couldn't figure out why either.

I don't know If I'd want a metal bit drilling into a metal tank full of gas😛
You could just take a brass punch and try and knock a hole into the bottom of the tank😀

All that you need to know.

I hate to admit that I know how to do this, but... you don't want to suck on the hose. Easy way to swallow some gas. You blow into the hose. A gas tank is a sealed pressurized system. Blowing into it will increase the air pressure inside the tank which will force gas out through the hose. Otherwise all your instructions are correct.

There's a tool to help you with this, all it is is a tube with a little lemon shaped pump near the end of it, all you do is use the pump to suck the gas up like you would with your mouth, then aim the end of the tube into a bucket. Safer than almost getting gas in your mouth 🙂 I have a cheapie once that cost like 2 bucks...

My dad and i usedto do this to drain these big planters that had no drain on teh bottom, they usedto get filled with water during the rainy season. We found that instead of sucking or blowing on that dirty pipe it was best to use a shopvac to get it started sucking.

don't you people watch Married with Children? Al Bundy taught us how to siphon gas from your neighbour's Mercedes!

OMG... maybe this is one of the ones I haven't seen. Otherwise I would have posted the Al Bundy solution. Which reminds me... they have a Married With Children DVD that I need to buy. 😀
