So I'm heading home on the subway... -OR- Whose side are you on for this one?

As the title says, I'm headed home on the subway round 10 pm at night after classes and not really paying attention to anyone else in the car except the cute blonde in front of me bobbing her head to the music on her Walkman when I hear loud voices off to my right. I turn my head and see a tall balding guy in his early thirties talking to another shorter and larger guy around the same age, who's most likely just come back from the gym - he decided to sprawl across three seats with his feet on the last one to relax, since the car wasn't very crowded at the hour.

So their voices are getting pretty loud to the point I can make them out pretty clearly - tall balding guy apparently walked across to guy #2 and asked him to remove his feet from the other seat, and not to "sit like a savage next time." Short not-quite-as-balding guy apparently gets angry pretty easily, and tells the other guy to "F*%k off and mind your own damn business, a$$hole." Guy #1 replies with, "I'm a taxpayer here ya know, you're destroying public property!" To which he's told to "F*^k off!" again.

Tall guy shrugs and heads back to his seat, but short-fat guy isn't quite done with him...he bangs his feet against the seat in a little act of protest, and when getting off walks up to the other guy (who's pretending to be reading his book) and says, "Mind your own goddamn business, you f!%k. You're intruding my space, don't be such a goddamn spy." and leaves the car. The rest of us watching are trying not to snicker/laugh and I go back to watching Ms. Bobbing Head for the rest of the way home.

I can kind of see where both of these guys are coming from - though he wasn't ripping the seat to shreds, it's not helping and taking up sitting space anyway...but on the other hand, does tall guy have to be such a neurotic? Can't decide myself, what do you think? ;)

I put my feet up like that all the time. I did it today, in fact, on the R train.

P.S.: anyone living in new york city, avoid some of the seats on car #7421, I think I had something on my shoes today. :)

actually, this reminds me of another story. My father was a conductor for the NYC transit, and I remember a story about one time, someone apparently used one corner of the subway car as their personal bathroom.

I don't know how it is up in Toronto, but a little dirt from shoes is probably the least of anyone's concerns.

Lets say that if a police officer had been present it would never have happened; the guy would have known not to sit like that, or the cop would have removed him just like they do the homeless.

Would you be upset if it was your property? While there are those who feel they have the right to do anything to public property because there is not clear ownership, but I believe public property is belong to all. If someone destroyed public property, then they deprive other of its use.

Well, the car I was in tonight was the messiest I've seen in a long time - and it was just newspapers littered about a bit. Usually it's *really* tidy, but the odd person putting his feet up isn't unheard of. :)

man, who cares. Let the guy sit how he wants. When I used to ride the bus to school, I'd get on at one of the first stops and just sprawl out in the back row until more peeps came on, and then I'd stick to one or two seats depending on the crowds.

late.

Who the heck isn't a taxpayer in Toronto. Our subways are built like a rock...he's not gonna do much damage with his feet up. Some people are so anal. In the off hours, the subways are so empty. If it was busy and people needed to sit, I'd tell him to put his feet down. But otherwise, who really cares except really anal people with no life that have to go around looking for stuff to make them feel important.

who gives a shiz if his feet were up. if he just had his feet on the seat, thats not going to mess it up anymore than someones bag there, or someones buttcheeks for that matter. as long as no one wanted to sit there, and the train was relatively empty...someone needs to mind there own goddamn business.

bobbing blonde? i wanna see...

<< Did you ask the blonde out? >>

No, she was also reading a Harry Potter book. Call me a snob, but a girl in her early twenties reading a book for kids is not a positive indicator in my opinion...

She could have been a mother or teacher reading it so she knows what her kids are reading.

If someone told me to remove my feet and not sit like a savage on the subway.
I would have told him the same thing.
