So, I'm having trouble with TPMS on my CPO Mercedes

I've had it in 3 times now for TPMS errors. It keeps losing the signal to the right front wheel sensor. It has also done that with the left front sensor once. I'll be driving along and see TPMS unavailable and the tire light will come on. I'll scroll through the menu and it will have readings on 3 wheels but one will just be blank.

They reset the system the first time as they couldn't duplicate the error. Second time I took it in they replaced the right front sensor and recalibrated. Same thing happened again. I might go for a couple days without seeing the error and then it will pop up with the warning and stay on for a few minutes or even longer until it picks up the reading and the light will go off.

I dropped the car off on Tuesday morning, they did some recalibration and kept it overnight so their head tech could look at it yesterday. He drove the car extensively and it finally faulted out while they were driving. Not sure where we're at at this point. They might replace the entire TPMS control unit.


I've never had a car with TPMS that gave me any trouble. Hoping they can figure this out and I won't have any more problems with the car. :whiste:


I love the car and hate being without it especially for something as stupid as this.

Update: They moved the wheels around and found it was still dropping the front right so they ordered a new control unit. Should be here tomorrow and I'll have my car back tomorrow afternoon if all goes well.

All of this is covered under warranty and the loaner car is costing me nothing.

That does suck. The only TPMS sensor problems I've had were on an older Titan where the battery just plain wore out. New sensor fixed the issue. I hope you get yours resolved. Does swapping another tire/wheel combo to the right front make the problem move around, or is it just that the right front tire is further away from the unit so the signal drops?

How much did they charge to change out the sensor? At least one of mine is out on my Nissan and I've been avoiding fixing it since it's not really a problem.

The car has staggered wheels so I can't move the wheels around and I have no idea where in the car the control unit is.

Plus, the dealership is right off the freeway on my commute in to work so it is convenient. I've had the chance to drive two different C300 sedans now and a GLC300 SUV.

It was around $50.00 iirc per tpms because you pay for the part and the installation as one cost.

I had a similar issue with my CPO 2014 Lexus GS350 F Sport. None of the tires would read when I got the car. They tried everything with programming to no avail. Swapped wheels/tires with another car on the lot and all worked perfectly. They had to replace all 4 TPMS sensors. This was done under warranty and they provided me a loaner for 2 days while they sorted through all the issues.

When I start the car, the light flashes about 6-7 times, then goes off for a minute or so and then comes on and stays on. This happens immediately after I put air in all tires, so I know they're not low. I disconnected the battery in hopes that would reset something ... but it didn't. Unfortunately this wouldn't be covered under warranty, so right now I'm just driving around with the light on and it's driving me crazy. From what I read, it's the sensors going/gone bad. I just hit 80k miles and apparently that's the magic number. I don't really feel like dishing out $400 to replace the sensors. arggghhhh

$400 for four new sensors? That seems kind of high. Maybe the next time you get new tires you could have the shop replace the tire pressure sensors on each wheel. I can't imagine the parts themselves are that expensive.

My car has been fine since they replaced the TPMS module. No more errant readings.

Yea - it's about 100/tire. It's best to replace them all at once, so ~~$400 total. I do most of the work on my car myself.... But I can't even get near something like this due to the computer system and programming involved. It's kind of annoying. I think you can buy the machine to do it, but the cost benefit is not nearly worth it for the amount of time I'd put it to actual use.

We owned my wife's 2006 Lexus IS for almost 8 years and never had any trouble with the TPMS. I guess I just assumed they were all that reliable.
 
You should be able to get aftermarket sensors much cheaper. Or, just pull the damn light in the dash. Although, I saw a lady yesterday driving on a flat tire in a Forester that wasn't more than 3 years old. Clearly TPMS is needed (and subsequently ignored by the same people that need it!).

Heh. I remember the light came on about 3 days after I had bought the car and I was like WTF? ALREADY?!?!!!!! Had to check the manual as to what it was since I never owned a car with it. But back to your question ..... even if you buy them aftermarket, you still can't install them yourself - correct? That's what pisses me off about the whole thing.
 
Try to see if you can buy/borrow a TPMS reader to get you the exact wheel giving the problem and then do the wheel swap to see if the error moves with the wheel or not. This will allow to pinpoint the actual problem rather than having to do blind part swaptronix.
 
I am actually quite thankful for TPMS, since when I get a slow flat on the Autobahn, I'm not sure I'd know it before I start spinning out at 120 mph.
If you're going the speed limit though, the effects of a flat should be more manageable though.

Still, if you're thinking about resale it's also probably a good idea not to cheap out of a replacement. Just be sure you have someone figure out which sensor is actually problematic, as sontakke indicates, this should be possible.
