I'm serious. A GP will seriously fubar your toes.

If this is a pediatrists best course of action, then OK.

How can you mess up removing a toenail?

Have you tried other things? There are solutions (I used Keralac but I hear that isn't used any more) and pills (Lamisil) that might work before having to go through the effort of removing the toenail. Even having a podiatrist remove it gives no guarantee of the toenail growing back and it will likely not be perfect even if it does.

They just kill the root. If they damage the root too badly during the removal you will get the same result. Even a little bit of damage can cause a really thick or thin nail or just one that looks funny.

There is a lot more to the nail than just the nail.

I would love it to be permanent. I'll ask.

I got this crap years ago driving trucks and showering in truckstops. Yea, I wore sandals. Still got it. Once you get it - well you got it. I've tried tea tree oil, soaking my feet in weak bleach solutions, antifungal crap, lamisil, etc. Seems I have the Island of Dr. Moreau mutant fungus. . .

Mine happened because I went to a resort for a week and then went straight to college. While at the resort I had one side of my toenail detach from the bed due to either my new pair of sandals or spending too much time in the sand. I assume that just made it that much easier to catch something in the dorm showers even though I wore sandles.

We work. Most of the action/power off of your foot comes from your big toe. Hence we have trouble with our big toes.

Why not try soaking in pure bleach?

It will do tissue damage, at a minimum it will be temporary but it can be dangerous. Use vinegar instead. Warm it up and soak your feet in it.

Still better than watching American Idol.

Yeah, it sounds like the OP has a golden excuse for the next few hours.

"Hey honey, want to go to the Vagina Monologues tomorrow? I'll pay..." "I'm sorry, I already got a better offer, I'm having my toenails ripped out tomorrow."
