So I'm graduating in 11 months from college..

When's an appropriate time to start job hunting? Here at UCLA there's supposed to be a whole lot of recruiters who come by, but I'm confused as to how this process works. What kind of people do they usually look for? Or how would I go about finding them? I'm a math+econ major with a not so great GPA and I have absolutely no idea what I want to do career wise..

My sister can help me get a position at World Savings bank as an internal auditor which seems like a good deal ($52k + travelling across the US 1-2 weeks out of the month + virtually stress free) but I'm trying to explore as many options as I can. Her internal auditor position has very little opportunity for advancement, as most people who take that job end up doing something else after two years--for example she's in law school right now--but I have little desire to go to law/biz school.

Did you guys find your first job through your college career center, want ads, or what?

I started going to career fairs December of my senior year, starting sending out resumes to accounting firms January of my senior year, interviews in February, had an offer for an internship by March. However, if I'd been going through interviews for full-time positions, I would start sending out resumes in September and I'd spend most of the summer hitting up the career fairs and recruiting events on campus.

This is assuming accounting firms. I do not know the timetable for other sorts of consulting firms or financial institutions.

Do you have any interest in a particular field? Finance?

I've been considering finance/accounting type fields, as those definitely seem to be most closely related to my major, and I really do enjoy numbers and what not..

I started to apply in October onwards.

I finished CS and was open to quite a few areas in which I would go in too. I just wanted experience and to learn. The job I would first go in to would probably not be my job 10yrs down the line. I see it as a stepping stone to get experience and to learn things. I do good work for them and I get experience out of them.

I'm in England had have this company setting me up interviews. They are a government run company and they have worked wonders for me.

I start my job tomorrow 🙂

um.... you should have been back in junior year. those internships you have (or should have had) would help get your foot in the door

1. contact your career development office. they can give you a schedule of which recruiters are arriving and when. believe it or not, they come rather early, such as late september, early october. you want to go to these meetings, introduce yourself to a recruiter, and hopefully secure yourself an interview. many of these are for financial-related jobs in very prominent companie, so it's right up your alley and i strongly encourage you NOT TO MISS THEM.

2. go to career fairs, as someone already said. december is a good time, but a lot of people are realizing that their future needs to be determined around that time, so it's preferable to do something earlier. that said, not all employers are ready to hire for the summer in november of the previous year, but it doesn't hurt one bit to touch base.

3. i'd hope UCLA has some sort of career hunting database online. use that as a guide. also, monster.com is not a bad resource, and neither is careerbuilder.com.

i'd really recommend that you do this kind of thing in college, though. the career offices at your school should be the best guide to start with.

If you are going to graduate in lets say June 06, you should start looking by october 05 and have a job lind up and accepted by feb or march 06 latest.

So if I were to accept an offer, or find one that interests me, would it still be possible to continue looking for something better?

You can always look for something better.

Does the bank job require you to get your CIA cert?
