You also might want to check out the rest of that forum on cigars and how to buy them. DO NOT buy cigars from the locals, not only will you not get a receipt (which you will need if you wish to take them out of the country), but they're probably junk (counterfeit or they stole the stuff the factory tosses out).

Got it - don't buy from locals. Awesome.

Yes. This is a good idea.

I'm getting my passport on the 12th, I haven't left Canada in my 21 years here, I'm wondering what I should expect going down south? I'd love to stop in the states but I don't think it's happening.

Thanks guys, Rob.

Edit - This is the place!

AFAIK, there are no flights from the US to cuba. you have to go to Mexico or Canada then to cuba.

Waste going there with your girlfriend. When you get the chance, let her get kidnapped so you can hook up with some nice young Cuban girls and have some fun.

When you get back home you may even make the news, like that last girl did, and make some money on top of everything.

You're correct. There aren't any from US to Cuba, but the OP said that he's departing from Canada.

I do that whenever I go out of country, because you just never know.

What about leaving small items for the workers at the resort? I've heard you are supposed to leave soaps or something for them in replace of a tip?

Well, you're not 'suppose' to... nobody is making you, but trinkets and old stuff you don't need may be more important to them than a couple of bucks. If you have any old baseball mitts, caps, shirts (especially with logos and teams) that you no longer need, pack those up with you. Pick up toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, nail polish etc to leave tips... and go to the dollar store and pick up some crayons, coloring books, markers, etc for the kids. You can use this stuff to barter with the local folks as well.

Trust me, i've known quite a few people that went down there, and some of the most enjoyable things they did was to give stuff to the local folks and see the expressions and gratitudes on their faces.

I knew a guy that brought an old laptop down with him (worth maybe $300 CDN) and traded it for a box of nice cubans cigars (worth $700).

What you can do is get a suitcase or two and pack it with 'gifts' (it doesn't have to be new, stuff from the local thrifts store will do too) to hand out, then use the empty suitcases to load up on cigars and liquor for back home.

Numerous dubious reports from this place, less than 30 days old...

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserRevi...ryp_Cayo_Coco-Ciego_de_Avila_Cuba.html

"...this old complex which needs major repairs starting from the rooms, grounds need better up keep and the pools needs work to be done, many tiles missing and lets not forget the murky colour of the water. By the looks of the colour they put chemicals once per week.

Most important is the food, if you want to lose weight you are at the right place, the food in the buffet was terrible along with the flying birds looking for food. Everybody we meet at the hotel said they same thing about the food. They must hire a new chef if they want to stay in business because at this rate they will not last.

We all wondered why they consider this hotel to be a 4 star, under my books it is a 3..."

"...We just spent a week at Tryp Cayo Coco. I honestly don't know how this facility rates a four star rating. The hotel rooms are just too rough and shabby. Linens & towels are worn and stained. The beds are uncomfortable to say the least. The resort itself is pretty and the beach is outstanding, but you still have to be in the room to sleep and spend time in there. It reminded me of the rental cottages I have booked over the years, but quite frankly they were more well cared for and comfortable then the room we had...VIP is a joke. Nothing at all in the brochure was in our room. We had to ask for everything and still didn't by weeks end receive some of the items. Not sure what the deluxe bathroom amenities were, didn't bother asking. ..I'm pretty sure the sheets were never changed and we had the same beach towels for the whole week. If you want something, it's less aggravation to go get it yourself."

"...Mosquitos are a big problem, take lots of bug spray with you. A truck comes around morning and night spraying billows of blue smoke that completely engulfs the resort, head inside, left some of my clothes outside on the patio and they were stiff as a board from it. They told us it was oil, but it sure smells like insecticide. All in all, we made the best of the vacation but felt the VIP/OceanView was money thrown down the drain..."

"...had to return to the main desk for unprogrammed keys, missing towels . . . ...The second of our 3 parties was "not booked" . . . main desk wanted to have her stay with complete strangers until a room came up . . . after some discussion a room was found . . . unprogrammed key was given . . . return to main desk . . . towels missing . . . return to main desk ... Luggage was "finally" delivered to the rooms . . . we could have brought them ourselves far faster and sooner but nonetheless they arrived .

Seconded. A friend of mine visited Honduras and had her purse stolen. She was stuck there for four weeks until her passport, social, etc arrived.

Here's what Skoorb had to say, if you believe him: "Fvcking communists". Of course that was 4 years ago that he visited.

Reading Skoorb's story makes me wanna go down there and "smoke a Cuban".

I'm going to Cancun in August. I'm nervous and excited at the same time. Not sure what to expect, but I'll certainly pack light and not check anything I care about.

As usual, Skoorb is dead wrong. My sister has been there numerous (6 I think) times and it basicly in love with the place and the people.

I am going there for xmas...
