So I'm getting into gaming, Now I need a new video card!

I'm finally getting into gaming, started playing DeltaForce Xtreme - just like blowin off heads. I upgraded my system a while back from the ol' Barton 2500@3200 to a A64 2800 running at 2.26ghz with 1GB(2x512 in dual channel) Corair XMS DDR400 at spec. But my good ol' 9500PRO just can't cut it anymore *sniff* (insert playing of taps here).

I'm thinking of getting a good PCI-X 6600 with 256MB of the GDDR2 on it. I saw Newegg had the XFX brand with those specs and dual DVI for $117. But I'm open to suggestions. I don't need the absolute best, just something that will handle games better.

EDIT:
I decided on the Gigabye 6800GS with 256MB (and 256bit) of GDDR3 for $189 from newegg. THanks for the replies!

I have the ASrock-ULI 939DualSATA2 mobo that has both the AGP and PCI-X slots on it. So right now of course I'm using the 9500PRO. When I upgrade the video card I'll go to the PCI-X slot...

Really? I never knew the ASrock mobo had a PCI-X slot

PCIx or PCIe? Is that the ULI chipset mobo that supports both apg and pcie? The 6800GS is a very good buy for PCIe right now.

What's your budget?

If you are a true gamer, you will get a 7800GT($305), which will last you a long time.

Or you can get a 6800GS($194), and be satisfied for at least a year.

Anything else, except for maybe X800 GTO, is not recommended, imho.

Also, you will want PCIe, aka, PCI Express. PCIx is totally different.

yeah u can get 128mb with 256 bit mem x800gto for like $135, go with GS if u have close to $200 to spend and 7800GT for $300

The size of your pocket book and your gamer status are not relative. A "true gamer" is just that. Wealth is not a requisite.

dont get the x800gto , get the x1600pro or XT or 6800GS .
x800gto has lack of shader model 3.0 .
and also mention how much money are u willing to spend .
do u want a Mid-range card , or a high-end card .

I just meant that most gamers appreciate the better quality of the 7800 GT.

I consider myself a gamer and am still using a 9600XT.

If I were to get one I would get a 7800 GT, because it seems to have a good price/performance ratio, though 6800 GS is certainly a good choice.

I guess I'm looking for bang for the buck. I'm definetly not interested in a $300 plus video card. Maybe $150-ish.

A true gamer would just save up the extra $100 to get the 7800GT or figure out what else to sacrifice on for a little while to make up the difference 😛

$150-ish is 6600GT, X800GTO/GT, X1600Pro territory.

Sure, but don't weigh ur decision on shder model 3.0too much, because if you actually gona use 3.0 mode in very few games that do offer it, u will find that ur framerate will slow down to almost unplayable, which makes it useless unless u just want to take pretty screenshots of water that looks slightly barely better in one (1) game up to date.

Well, thats the one I ordered. It will surely do a better job than my crusty old 9500PRO, thanks for the help anyway people!
