don't think you got off so easy, she's gonna think about it for a while and say "you never really proposed!". you're gonna have to go a a nice restaurant or something and do it again for real.

Well, the engagement is the easy part. Once I ask her to be my wife (engagement being more a promise to marry than actual proposal), things get more hairy. I think we do things differently in Finland 🙂

😕
So you go out and drop the 2 months salary on the ring and you're not even definitely gonna marry her???

It works differently in Finland (I guess). Basically, before marriage you get engaged ("kihlaus" in finnish). Basically that means that you both agree to get married. It is more or less like a verbal agreement, if I backed out from the engagement, she could sue me. At this point we buy the rings. Sometime later I will ask her to become my wife, and at that time I will buy her another ring (THE ring. The Expensive ring). Married woman has two rings, the engagement-ring, and the "real" marriage-ring. Men have just one ring.

Yes, I am going to marry her. But we estimate that the actual marriage is propably 2 years away.

I didn't spend two months salary in the ring. In fact, she paid for them 🙂. I will reimburse her later, since we really bought them together, I just didn't have the money available at that moment.
