So I've been looking at Boxx Tech and HP for building my 3D Graphics Workstation.. but after doing some research I realized I could just build it myself for 1k less.. so tell me what you guys think of this rig.... any changes I should make and so on..

*I will be using this rig for 3D Animation (Maya, Lightwave, Zbrush, Mudd) and also for my
video editing purposes.. along with Photoshop, Corel and all those goodies..

(just one hard drive for the moment.. then add more later once i figure out how raids work 😀 )

Add 3 drives and worry about RAID later. OS, Source, Render (scratch) is optimal. If you want RAID, consider RAID1 for the source drive (or 0 if doing HD video).

I might also get a 74GB WD Raptor then install the OS and all other apps i use on that.. then save all other info on the spare 3 drives...
 
i guess im lost on this part as to y not get like a quad core c2d processor and 4gb ram and such?

cause i could get theoretically 8 cores instead of 4..

i thought about that.. because i could do exactly what you're saying and get a

Intel Core 2 Duo Q6600 and then get a mobo with Nvidia 680i chipset.. but i thought it would of been
more beneficial to get the xeon and have 8 cores.. instead of 4
 
Do your apps support 8 threads? I have an X7DAE, and its a great mobo. Definitly get 4 dimms, but consider 4 GB of ram. You'll want it soon enough, and you wont want to replace your dimms.
Also, consider getting a supermicro SC743T, or one of their prebuild mobo-case combos. I have one, and their great. The mobo does onboard sata RAID, so maybe get 4 disks. RAID 1 with big drives for storage, and two raptors, one for os and one for scratch. A seperate scratch disk makes a big difference.
 
yup.. im using maya (Mental Ray) i can select how many threads id like to use when rendering.. along with other programs that can use it as well
