Not saying you have this... Are you using your own discs with stickon labels? If so, I know what the problem is.

Have you checked the chassis to see if the mounts are tight?

But if not and it really is annoying, NEC3550a is about $35 at Newegg. If it has been running a long time, it will wear the bearings. That is a very good reason NOT to leave a DVD in a player sitting on a menu (settops burn out this way - Barney hates DVD players)

I find it varies a lot from disc to disc. Some are silent, some loud.

you can use the tool that comes with nero (assuming you have it) to force the drive to read at a certain speed. for movies, 16x is not required. the app is in the tools section in the nero folder. it's called Nero DriveSpeed.

the mounts are mounted tight, they are tighter than I have ever put them on any system I've owned.

someone just tell me it's getting old?

So if you want your optical drive to stop humming....give it the words to the song? Lol, j/k. I'd check the mounts, and if you've got room maybe put some rubber grommets between the drive and the case. Other than that though, chances are the bearings in it are just wearing out. If it bothers you that much you can always go pick up a new one on the cheap from the Egg.
