So if you want to return your order to dell do they really offer to take money off to get you to keep it?

Im excited to get my new lappy in the next week or so, but I just realized that the damn thing is 2 inches thick and the whole 9pounds of weight isnt that thrilling either. Is it true that if I decide that the laptop is too big and I want to return is that most dell CSRs will offer you something to get you to keep the laptop?

It depends on a few factors but usually they'll offer you a discount (up to 10%) through their RETENTION department.

How much you have ordered in the past.
How many of your previous purchases were returned.
etc.

My T41 - 2379DJU was around $1730

1.6ghz Intel Pentium-M Centrino (Comparable to a ~2.5ghz P4)
256MB Ram (which i upped to 768)
40gb HD
DVD/CD-RW Combo
14.1" SXGA
3 Year Warranty
802.11b (although i picked an internal 802.11g card for ~50)
Weight: 4.5lbs
Avg. Battery Life: ~5 hours

Since its made out of magnesium alloy, the thing is like a tank... a very light tank, but a tank nonetheless....

I can honestly say without a doubt, i will never buy another non-IBM laptop again. This thing is a godsend.

You just jealous that my laptop is twice as thick and twice as heavy as yours ;) It could crush you!

to be honest, performance in a laptop isn't all it's cracked up to be. i find the difference in performance between a high end laptop (high end as far as graphics and cpu are concerned) and low end (again same definition) not to be as big as the difference you find between high end desktops vs low end desktops.

i'd rather get less cpu/graphics and a smaller lighter weight machine for laptop than a heavier more cpu/graphics machine.

I have warned Gobadgrs repeatedly that the Dell 9100 is a HUGE ASS MOFO. I don't think he gets it yet. When he receives it, it will start to sink in.

I would cancel the order and get a 600m or 8600 instead.

the biggest of laptops i've seen, and the 9100 is one of the biggest i've seen, to me aren't laptops. they are desktops that lack in performance.

i can kind of see making a portable media center (like Toshiba's). i can see where they have their place, but not as a laptop and not in my laptop bag and DEFINITELY not on my shoulder. those things are monsters.

nope, i'm very happy with my 1 ghz P3 Tablet PC. 2 lbs. i can live with that. :)

You would think someone like me would own a Dell 9100. Our current laptop stays in the bedroom, plugged into the wall 98% of it's life. Even I think the 9100 is overkill.

The ideal laptop for me is the Compaq X1000/HP ZT3000 with the Dell 8600 a close 2nd.

I have a 5150 and it's as large as I'd take a laptop.

It spends 98% of it's time on my desk plugged in at work, 1% at home in front of the tv, and 1% at school.

If I could do it again I'd get something smaller; but this thing is pretty fast..

I know youve warned me :p but for the price, I think I got a hell of a deal. We'll see how much I hate toting this thing around once I get it.

I've been debating canceling my order on the 9100 and getting the 8600 instead with a mobile p4 cause itll be lighter and have better battery life. How do you know what a mobile p4 is comparable to? I am debating either the 2.0 755 mobile p4 or the 1.8 745 mobile p4. How would they compare to a 3.2 hyperthreaded p4?

It really depends on what you want to use it for and how portable you want it to be.

The first thing I look for in a laptop is the screen size. That pretty much determines what lines from different manufacturers to look at.
