So if you are a cop and get a DUI...don't break out a cop car window

Isn't this just a little messed up? If you get pulled over for a DUI AND YOU ARE A COP, then that's not enough to cost you your job. But if you cause damage to the squad car that they haul you away in, it's a felony and enough to boot you. So....in conclusion....driving drunk and potentially threatening the lives of other people on the road when it's your job to drive around SOBER and actually stop people from doing what you just did is okay. But smashing up a repairable patrol car is such a horrible and viscious crime that it costs you your career?

PEORIA ? City police officer Joseph A. Gray was placed on unpaid leave Wednesday, three days after allegedly driving drunk, crashing his car in Woodford County and kicking out the window of a squad car.

He is charged with DUI and criminal damage to government property for breaking the window of a Metamora Police Department cruiser, according to affidavits filed by State's Attorney Michael Stroh in Woodford County Circuit Court.

Breaking out the window is a Class 4 felony, which carries maximum penalties of three years in prison and a $25,000 fine. With a felony conviction, Gray also would be unable to serve on a police force.

Once Peoria Police Chief Steven Settingsgaard confirmed Gray had been charged with a felony, the officer's status was changed Wednesday from paid leave to unpaid leave.

Gray, a patrol-level officer hired by the Peoria Police Department in September 1999, also was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Metamora Police Chief Mike Todd said it took just more than $1,300 to repair the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria, one of his department's three police cars, and it is back on patrol.

Police reports indicate Gray, 33, of Metamora was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Hickory Point Road near Santa Fe Trail west of Metamora about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Woodford County Sheriff's Department responded, with Metamora police later assisting. Sheriff's reports indicate Gray, the only person in the 2005 Nissan, smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, staggered while walking and admitted to drinking "a lot of alcohol."

He refused tests that would have determined his blood-alcohol content, reports state. Failing to submit to testing usually is an automatic 12-month suspension of driving privileges.

After Gray's arrest about 6:30 a.m. by a sheriff's deputy, a Metamora police officer drove Gray to the county jail in Eureka. On the way, according to police reports, Gray began hitting and kicking the rear, passenger-side window and told the driver to stop the car and let him out. He continued kicking the window until the glass and trim broke out.

Eureka and Woodford County authorities arrived at North Main Street and Maple Lawn in Eureka to help restrain Gray and transport him to jail.

Gray was released on $1,200 bail Monday. He is scheduled for pre-trial hearings on April 3.

In 2006, Gray received a Distinguished Service Award from the Peoria Police Department in conjunction with National Police Week.

Silly, but at least one way or the other he got pwned. Drunk driving is a scourge. I really think it's not being addressed satisfactorily. Recently a guy on the city council in this city failed the breathalyzer built into his car (he was under legal limit but terms of his probation say no alcohol at all), so in jail, but just let out. Turns out he had a DUI twice in 1998, then in 2007 again for rear-ending somebody while drunk, so he gets probation and a car-inhaler and yet this dumb fvck still is drinking.

And still on the City Council board.

Why do we put up with such damaged goods making decisions for us?

I feel just the opposite. MADD, SADD, and all the other special interest groups that have pushed stiffere laws need to go back to their caves. 1 DUI costs thousands of dollars, removed license, probation, and community service. And it doesn't even matter if you were truly driving a car or motorcycle.

Get a 2nd one, even if your first happened when you were 21 and the second happened at 70, instant jailtime.

Multiple offenders need a different fix, but the heavy fines for first timers, is all publicity motivated.

Just FYI for the original poster:

He will hopefully lose his job regardless, however the reason why they state he can no longer serve is convicted felons cannot own a firearm. Hence, he can't be a cop.

Because we ourselves, in general, are also damaged goods. Poor education.
