"They" don't but "you" can. Seriously, we've taken to making our own soda syrups now using real ingredients. The carbonated water comes from our sodastream, so its pretty convenient. Just look up the older recipes from soda jerks in the early to mid 20th century. You'd really be surprised what soda could taste like.

Thanks for the tip. I have one of those and was looking for something to enhance the water with besides the syrups they sell which aren't must better than what is in soda.

OP, you might want to read more labels. MOST of the 'juice' being sold in the stores is artificial.

Reading labels will drive you to not want anything from the supermarket.

I was going to make a thread about it, but I went looking for a natural ice cream last night at Shaw's. No dice. There was literally nothing in the freezer that was just dairy, sugar and flavor. Everything had, at a minimum, guar gum or carrageenan. I mean, holy shit, thickeners in ice cream? What the fuck am I paying 5 bucks a gallon for? Or in some cases, nearly that for a pint?

If the store has Haagen-Dazs Five, that's about the only thing left - and they have 4 flavors. Even other "premium" brands had all sorts of shit.

Does anyone else remember Breyers advertising that they only had 5 ingredients in their ice cream? Not anymore! Vanilla was the closest, with 6. They're using thickeners now too.

What the fuck is going on with my food?

They want to increase profits by killing you :)

I've been looking at what MovingTarget mentioned above and holy crap so far what they made soda out of was basic and natural as in real natural.

I think the only juice I drink is grape, apple and orange and it's not that often. None of those have anything other than water + the fruit. If you mean stuff like Juicy Juicy and the like than yeah there's a lot of other shit in there and none of it has to do with juice. Even those powdered drink mixes are out of hand, they just about rival soda for what they put in there to make a drink out of water.

Evidently, the Beaver Ass Juice lobby has loads of money.

I have flatly refused any and all contributions that I believe to be intended to influence my position of power. One might say that I have a vested, personal interest which drives my conviction and policy-making actions.

Plenty of fake juice out there.. shit like 'sunny D' ( :vomit: ), any 'fruit drink', etc.

Maybe your labelling laws are weaker there, but it seems if stuff isn't straight juice here, it has to say 'sweetened' (if it's sweetened watered-down juice) or 'drink' (if it ain't juice, or below some threshold.. not sure what that is).

Question: What is the minimum amount of fruit juice which must be contained in a "juice drink", e.g., orange juice drink?

Answer: When a product as consumed contains at least 25 % of the named juice, its common name may appear as "(naming the fruit) juice drink", "(naming the fruit) juice cooler", etc. However, since this type of common name emphasizes the juice content of the product, it could create an erroneous impression with regard to the actual juice content of the product unless a bilingual declaration of the percentage of juice present appears on the principal display panel of the label, clearly and prominently displayed and in type size at least as large as the numerical portion of the net quantity.

When the percentage of juice is less than 25 %, the word "juice" may not appear in the common name of the food; however, the claim "made with X % fruit juice" may be made, separate from the common name. De-characterized juices must NOT be included in the calculation of % juice present.

Neat. So in practice we end up with:

'100% apple juice' or
'apple drink'...

I suppose because no company wants to write "apple juice drink, 30% juice" on the label.

Great so I'm an addict and need a 10 step program. Nice...

Ugh, "Natural flavors can come from things like a beaver's backside" :(

I can't believe the amount of chemicals in that chick's lab or that she has any sense of smell left after using them.
Are you scared of chemicals or something? There really aren't many chemicals in that lab, and I'm sure most of them are food grade and "generally regarded as safe". I don't even know why they're wearing lab coats.
