They cheered everyone. Probably quite a few Americans there. I know when the Olympics are in the US we cheer for other countrys.

Maybe there are some popular atheletes on the team. I think that most people won't associate politics with sports, just like many Americans will root for various European or South American soccer/football teams.

Americans typically make up most live spectators in the Olympics.
a) Americans have lots of money
b) America has a crapload of athletes
c) American athletes are the most well off with corporate endorsements (their families can come)

The world still hates America...although I think it's totally unjustified.

As many people here have pointed out, and other people from other countries (if you talk to them) people do not hate Americans, they hate american and the administration and the foriegn policy.

I've met tons of people looking to avoid Americans on vacation in the Carribean and hate going to the US because they don't like the people.
