So, if someone wanted you to make CDs for their wedding...

How much would you charge? My wife has her own business doing wedding cakes/specialty cakes and one of her clients saw the CD I created for our wedding. Well, she asked my wife how much would I charge to make 50 of them! I know you can get a 50 pack of CD-Rs fairly cheaply between $5-10, CD labels ~$20, Case inserts ~$20, Cases ~$18.

So what do you think? $4-$5 per CD? I'm checking around and that is about how much they charge.

Heh :) Well, I'm going to try and have the majority of the music legally strictly because the sound quality is better than what you would download through Kazaa or whatever. :)

Umm, since when is it legal to mass produce and sell CD's with songs and not have to pay any royalties on them? Did i not get that memo?

Since when did you fail English reading comprehension and miss the part where I said I was going to obtain as much of the music as possible legally?

So you're going to pay for 50 copies of each of the albums you take the music off of?

When you find 80 minutes of music that is both (a) free and (b) does not suck, give me a call. :p

just because you get the music legally, I don't think you can resell it like that without paying some fees.

Yes, I do realize that. That is why I said 'I'm going to try and get the majority of the music legally'. There may be some songs I'll be unable to get legally. I don't know. But, I've been looking around on the internet at companies that do custom wedding CDs and I'm just going to build my business model off of what they do and customize it to my needs.

Since my wife has clients and contacts coming in and out for her wedding cakes, it only makes sense that I set up something that I can do to make a little extra money on the side as well.

Why is it that just because I put together the concepts 'music', 'make CD', and 'make money' together that people automatically throw in 'illegal'? Sheesh.

if you're only planning on charging $4-5 a disc, and you plan to do the whole label/insert/media/royalties thing, you will lose money BIG TIME. You'll have to charge much more, and it probably won't be worth it, unless your wife caters to rather wealthy clients.

The companies that make the CD's commercially use public domain stuff. Search for public domain music, and you'll get some ideas...

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to figure out right now. If I charge $4 for a lot of 50 that will be $200. Minus the ~$20 for the CDs, ~$20 for cd labels, ~$20 for inserts. That's ~$140 right there not counting ink and royalty fees (something I still have to figure out or just use public domain as others have suggested).

Just exploring the idea right now.

How about this for a start:

3 albums, what a pity only at 56kbps.
Their other albums are better, though.
And none is good for a wedding.

Sign up for the iTunes music store. You can buy songs for $.99 each, and you're allowed to make as many CDs as you want using them :)

What's on the CD? Just music? Or a photo slideshow? just curious.

Anyway, if you hang around Hot Deals enough you'd have a stock of Free CDs, a stock of Free Jewel Cases. Just some paper for an insert and labels if needed. I guess decide if you're doing it for profit or for publicity and then charge accordingly.

Yeah, I saw a good deal on a pack of 50 Fuji CD-Rs for around $4.99 after rebates earlier. I'm going to have to depend on coupons to the office supply stores for the inserts and labels to get them at a discount unless I can find a good wholesaler. The rest I already have (cd creation software, image editing software, etc)

So can I buy 18 commercial songs for $25 (good ones are >$0.99) and make infinite copies, then sell on ebay or something?

Let's say I find a new album, buy those songs and sell it at a fraction of retail. Is that legal? I'd like to know :)
