So I went to a CompUSA today

...and it was bad. Real bad. They have gigantic banners stating 10% to 30% off all items in the store, and once you walked in it was mostly 10% (5% off on computers and iPods, even!)

Such unflattering sales. Although they do have 30% off on cell phones (the prices are still high, but not too bad).

10% off on speakers. Going to wait it out and see if I could snatch the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's cheap.

I went to the last CompUSA store closing and they jacked up the prices ~30-40% above what you could get online, then they did the 10-20% off crap. Plus there were like 20+ employees just kinda standing around.

By the way if you did need iPods and consoles, they're "kinda" on sale. Saw a bunch of PS2's for $116...everyone else must've snatched up the stock of PS3's and 360's.
And no, this isn't a hot deals thread...just rant I guess.

From what I read that's their everyday price! :Q

The only CompUSA we had down here closed down. Couple of years ago me and my brother walked in to buy a Voodoo GPU (i suddenly feel older) because we found that Total Annihilation killed our Compaq. Even at our young age, we took a look at the price and asked our parents to leave, it was a full $50 over what we saw at BestBuy.

The second time we went in was again with my brother, because he needed something for his Zune. Again, same thing. Walked in, glared over the prices, and he said "fuck this mess" and walked out. Drove past it myself two months later and they were selling the building.

I don't feel pity for them, but it was the only place I could buy PSUs, cables, fans, and other components locally. It did come in handy in an emergency.

Yup. Here in the NE they were the only B&M chain other than the occassional MicroCenter that reliably carried that stuff.

Other than that, the only thing else they did reliably was suck and not care about sucking.

Every time I went in there I felt compelled to save some hapless noob from grieviously overspending for crap.

Sad.

When they went out of business in MA, I got Windows Vista Ultimate for 60% off. I don't think they're in a hurry to close down so the markdowns will be slow going.

It's probably not CompUSA selling the merchandise at this point. My uncle is a consolidator (generally in the hardware business), and yeah, that's pretty much what they do - bump the prices up then "discount" them back to normal price. There's a reason why he works about 6 months a year and makes pretty large jack.

I did get one good deal last week, I picked up a 2nd generation Ipod shuffle for $54... marked down to $60 and 10% off.

You could tell the employees didn't give a crap... I don't blame them, though, they'll be out of a job here soon, why would they care?

CrapUSA is the only company I've turned into the FTC for rebate fraud.

Bastards kept me on terminal hold before the complaint, fell all over themselves after i filed the complaint.

CC is next on the chopping block.

Yep, CompUSA closed down a bunch of stores earlier in 2007. I got the same Vista Ultimate deal.

The percentage will increase over time. Just be patient.

Pretty par for the course to have garbage sales the first few weeks. Music World and another local record store went out of business this past year and the sales SUCKED the first month or so. It was about 25% off "select items" with already inflated prices, which brought things down a dollar or two. However, people still bought it so as stock dwindled, they finally went for 30%, 40% and 50% off the 5 remaining discs.

Just like when CUSA closed their first slew of stores a year ago....you are just going to have to wait a month or more and watch the HD section for reports of prices dropping nicely. Right now, the liquidators, not CUSA, is in charge of the selloff of the stores and their contents. So the liquidators set the initial prices and how quickly they drop them down. In Atlanta, for example, they had three separate liquidators selling off the various CUSA stores that closed in that area. Prices and their percentages off varied widely between stores depending upon which liquidator was closing which store.

Give it a few more weeks.....then the prices will begin to plummet.....and the scavengers will flock in.

Actually, the stores are closing very correctly. Maximizing profit. That's about all that can be done right now.....and cannot blame the liquidators for trying to make as much as possible from the gullible right now. The true sales will come later, but the question is always will the good stuff still be around or will the "stupid" be taken in by the "huge sales" right now?
