So I went snowboarding today for the first time...

Thats right. I live in MD, and we drove to some ski resort in PA for half of the day. $47 to rent a snowboard and boots + unlimited lift rides. Then $15 in the resort tavern for a pitcher of Miller Lite and a pint as well. Then another $12 in the food place for a sh*tty cheesesteak, curly fries, and a Dr.Pepper. I busted my butt soo many times, I ripped my gloves apart (threw them out), and I gave up after an hour. Thats when I went to the bar to drink away my pain. It wasnt as easy as I thought it would be. I can skateboard a little bit, I thought it would have been similar. I should have rented ski's. My right foot was first on the board, and I didnt know how to stop, turn right, turn left...anything! I just fell, got up, fell.....

To stop, push your back foot out alongside your front foot so that the board is facing perpendicular to the slope. Lean into the mountain. You will stop.

And you're right, it's not as easy as it looks, it takes some practice 😉

Aw man you gotta keep trying and trying and trying... 🙂

notfred's advice for stopping is good. By the end of my first day I could kind of stop and that's about it.

That's weird, in an hour you should have been owning the freestyle park

Man, I could barely even get on/off the ski lift with the snowboard on. Next time, Im gonna rent ski's. They looked easier.

You'll pick up the basics easier with ski's. And then learning becomes much harder.... With a snowboard it's the exact opposite. Figuring out the basics is a b!tch and then progressing is a lot easier.

Anyway, stopping is basicly just turning sharply quickly. Most important thing to remember is to lean into the mountian while turning and stopping like notfred said. Otherwise you'll catch an edge and are in for all sorts of pain.

Anyway, keep with it. I've found snowboarding to be a hell of a lot more enjoyable than skiiing. It just takes a few trips to pick up the basics.

Edit: You gave up after an hour? WTF!? I changed my mind. Quit now.

My thread on the exact same topic that I posted a few days ago...more advice in there

How come you stopped after an hour, especially after paying all that money? I kept at it for the whole day (around 7 hours with one 1 hour break).

Explain this "lean into the mountain" idea. What exactly does it mean to "lean into the mountain".

My biggest problem was stopping. I couldn't control the board, it rotated where ever it felt like it. And when I tried to tell it where to go, I fell.

Maybe leaning uphill would be a better way to put it. For example, if you're turning toeside (you toes are pointing uphill) they you'd want to lean into the mountain (uphill) as you turn. Conversely, if you're turning heelside (toes pointing to the bottom of the mountian) you'll want to lean back into the mountain (uphill) as you turn. Simple.

Keep practicing. You'll get it.

Man, all these threads really make me miss riding 🙁

omg, you quit after an hour? wuss. 😛

should of took a lesson, that would've help save the hour you've spent on your arse. beginning snowboard is all about balance. people already gave you good advice so i'm not going to go there...good luck with skis.
