So I went snowboarding for the first time yesterday...

...and today I am in pain (the good soreness pain though).

Snowboarding is fustrating and fun at the same time. Its an odd sport like that. And its very irritating when you see 10-year olds snowboarding like pros!

I still don't know how to control the board and spent a third of my time on my ass sliding on the snow. I spent most of my time on the begineers hill (still wasn't too small..it needed a lift), and then at the end, at my evil friend's insistence went on the big crazy hill.

Needless to say, I didn't make it down that hill properly. The first steep part of it, I went down dragging my ass on the ground. The problem was that I was supposed to keep the board horizontal to the slope and use my heels to slow down, so I wouldn't go down to fast. Problem is, I can't keep the board horizontal. It always goes to the left. EVERYTIME and on any hill! It's odd like that. So I'd generate speed down the hill, then the curve would come up...and seeing how I couldn't really turn, Id just fall. The problem was that by now in the late evening, the snow turned to ice. Not fun.

So anyway, how the hell do you guys learn how to snowboard?

take lessons. A few days on the slopes and you'll get it soon enough.
Yep. It's a bitch at first, but then you'll "get it" and it will suddenly be fun. I bruised my ribs on both sides before I finally figured it out.

The first day is the worst. A few more times and you'll be good to go and laughing at how gay the skiers look/(are).

How it it compared to skate boarding? I use to skateboard quite a bit about 10yrs ago lol.

snowboarding RULES!!!

first day is always the toughest...the following days aren't so bad as you get used to it....

first day i went up, that night...UGH...next day i was in horrible pain but i went up again anyways....and as you board, the pain goes away...then came the next week.... 🙁

cooool more snowboarders!

The good news is that you are past the hardest part.
The first day or two of snowboarding is much harder than the first day or two of skiing.
But after that, snowboarding is easier. You will be able to handle the black diamond's much sooner than you would if you were skiing.

snowboarding is AWESOME!! 🙂 I love it, self taught..

personally I find learning to stop toe side was easier.....if you're going down a steep hill put your fingers on the snow and just practice rocking your heels up and down (your toe edge is on the snow you are facing the hill) keep your finger touching the hill so that you don't lean too far back and catch your back edge. if you catch the back edge I hope you have a helmet on 😛 just slide down like that learning to balance on your toes.. learning heal side just takes time just learn to keep lifting your toes up. you'll probably find that a blue trail will be easier to learn on than a green...

you should try to hit up the slopes at east 2x a year. you wont get the hang of it until your 4th or 5th time.

i have a friend that's really good at it, i went up a few times with her and pretty much got tutored by her. i had the same problem for the first part of my first time... you just gotta keep at it, you'll get it eventually as your body learns to control the board more.

or be hardcore like me and hit the slopes for 10 straight hours your 1st day 😉 I'd never done a winter sport before and told myself i'm not leaving the mountain until I can make it down without falling....I did that and went on to another trail 🙂

the pain didn't kick in til the next day when I realized sitting was painful. was like that for a week but was able to stay up and go down everything except diamonds.. just took time learning to go down them in a more smooth manner. board with some good friends so that they go down different/harder trails watch and just relax. don't try to keep up with them just go down the trails eventually you'll keep up with them more and more.

I skiied for about 10 years straight. Then last season i started boarding. I love it.

It took me about 3 days (spread out over several weeks) to get the feel for it. I didn't take a lesson though.

That was last year. I've already got 15 days in this year and have 2 more trips coming up. Very pumped. I've gotten so much better it's crazy...practice is key, and the only way to practice is to get out there more than 2 or 3 times a season.

And yes, my first 3 times snowboarding were some of the most painful times in my life...but i rarely fall anymore, and when i do, it's cause i was trying something stupid

you sounds like me... I've gone boarding a few times, maybe 5 or 6, and I was like you. I still have a problem with the board tending to go to the left; that's due to you slicing in with your heel edge. I have a hard time carving with my toe edge, and so I can do left turns well, but not right turns. And I still fall a lot. You just gotta go more often, and you'll get the hang of it.

i went boarding last year, first day i got there i took 3 hours lessons. it hurt bad i could ride fine on my heels but getting my toes to turn was my prob, i alawys put to much weight while on my toes and feel. after the 2nd day i was jetting down the heel turning ,stopping was easy. it hurt and damn did i bust it a few times. im going in 3 weeks to new mexico again then purgatory(sp?), CO after that.

GL and take some damn lessons or youll spend the whole trip "learning" instead of doing.

 and :advil; for the pain

just incase anyone else is interested I picked up some todd richards snowboarding DVD's from best buy this year. we just got a park at the hill I board at. watched the DVD's and they've helped me a little. last week I did my 1st method. i'm a very visual learner the DVD worked well for me. teaches some grabs and 1 teaches spins. and some pipe techniques.

i dont live near snow nor mountains but skateboarding helped, i used to be crazy good at skating. ive wakeboarded for about 5 years also so that helped tons, i can do some crazy stuff on the water.

one day ill move by some mountains, arkinsaw sucks.
