So I went jogging today... now with a jogging related question

And the ankle that I rolled playing basketball on Sunday started to hurt as I was doing my last lap around my block. So, I try to go easy on it, finish my lap... and now 15 minutes later its on fire. fsck. Anyway, any guesses on how long you are supposed to lay off an ankle after rolling it?

<---235lbs, and just started to take up jogging to lose some weight. I include my weight in case its important (ie I put more stress on my ankle running than a 130lbs guy would)

EDIT (originally from lower down in thread): jogging related question: what should I eat after jogging? I get really hungry about an hour after jogging, and since I prefer to do it at night (if I did it in the morning I'd have to be up by 5:XX AM, and that just isnt going to happen), either I go to bed hungry, or I eat right before going to bed, which isnt helping my goal of losing some weight. Is there anything low calorie, yet filling, that I should consider eating, or am I going to have to move my jogging into some point earlier in the day? I am trying to make jogging as easy on myself and my schedule as possible, as that makes it more likely that I'll keep doing it, and I prefer to do it when its cool out (ie, when the sun isnt out). So, either morning or night, but I start my school job at 7:30 on MWF, and the other days I get up around 6:30-ish, and I really dont want to get up earlier (I already slap the sleep button more often than I should).

Ice pack and a pressure bandage will help.

Get the bandage as tight as possible to prevent swelling up again. Rolling an ankle again is very easy if it's still hurt from the previous time

I didnt feel it roll... it just started hurting again. Lot of pain when I extend my foot outward, much less when it is pointing up

Hopefully you don't have it as bad as I did. I rolled my ankle playing basketball several months ago, it hurt so bad for a few days I couldn't sleep at night. I stayed off for about 2 weeks and started playing again, but it would hurt after playing. Being the dumbass I am I kept playing occasionally through the pain. I finally stopped when school ended last June, I've only played once or twice this summer and it feels pretty good now. Once school starts up again in a couple weeks I think i'll be back at full strength, or close to it. I weigh about 190lbs by the way.

The worst pain for me came after I was done playing or running, so if it gets worse tonight I'd say stay off it for a while.

Yeah, it feels worse right now. So, I'm wearing my hunting boots to school and lacing the right one up really tight. And taking some IB Profen (sic).

You injured yourself on Sun, and expected to be all better on Wed?

It takes at least two weeks for any soft tissue injury to heal correctly. Eight to eleven weeks for bone injuries. Stay off the ankle for at least two weeks, then evaluate how it feels with moderate stress. Trying to go back too early only results in re-injuring yourself, and doubling the healing time... not to mention increasing the pain dramatically.

Trust me, you're talking to the re-injury king here. :(

Agreed, also don't go back to full-on running/turning/twisting on your ankle after you think it's better. Do it gradually.

you're doing the right thing. Take a few days off, maybe even a week or more if it doesn't feel 100% better, ice it, and take ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain reliever. Once it feels 100% better, ease back into physical activity. Don't rush back in. I learned that the hard way with ITB syndrome in my knee; I was out for the whole season.

From my experiences Ankles take a LONG time to heal. My doctor told me that it's also one of the areas you have to stretch out before working out.

dood, i have the same problem..been running for nearly 2 months to get back in shape...went to play ultimate frisbee and hurt my right ankle. Now everytime I run it completly kills me running and afterwards is a nightmare. I've stopped all together for about a week and a half now. I feel like i'm already getting out of shape too. It sucks!

Well at least I didnt crack my rib! :p

Anyway, I have just started jogging and didnt want to use it as an excuse to put it off too long, and thus effectively quit. But I guess I'll have to. Usually, though, I come back from minor injuries like this in a couple days w/o a problem. I've broken fingers/knuckles quite a few times (not that I'm implying they are in the same class), and while I dont use that specific finger later that week, I am using it well before 8 weeks is over. Its hard to give an exact figure (I dont use a calendar to decide when to use it again, just start when it feels fine), but I'd guess no more than a month.

Another jogging related question: what should I eat after jogging? EDIT: I dont know about the title "king of re-injury". I've done some stupid things with half healed injuries before... :|

Hey!

LOL, you got me there. And I even tried to work through it... only to aggravate it (and possibly even widen the crack) and end up at the doctor's office yesterday to find out it really was broken.

If I serve as nothing else to you, at least let me serve as a bad example. :p

Fingers don't get the pounding that ankles do (or the kind of constant stretching that ribs do). They will heal up to the point of pain free and safe use much faster. Also, they are smaller bones. The smaller the bone, and the more you can keep it immobilized, the faster it will heal.

Your ankle problem sound like a soft tissue injury anyhow (don;t take my word for it though)... so comparing it to a broken bone is probably a waste of time here.

On soft tisuue injuries, every time I've tried to return to using the area before a minimum of two weeks, I've reinjured the area. So my advice is to take it very easy on the ankle for two weeks minimum, then gradually return to using it.

--Disclaimer: I am not a doctor nor have I ever claimed to be a doctor. If your foot falls off, it ain't my fault.

Just some fluid right afterwords, eat some veggies to hold you over (without any dressing or dip or crap like that) and you should be fine. Bananas are EXCELLENT for a nice after jog snack.

try a small protein shake, with milk, this will help your bones, and your muscles, the protein wil help your muscle to recover, and the milk will help your ankle heal up

If the foot falls off, I'll kill you :|:|:| 7.62 millimeter, full metal jacket :|:|:|

:p

Anyway, all I was saying about with the finger example was that your numbers seemed kinda high. But I'll try to give the ankle 10-14 days off and be nice to it during that time (I've got my extremely comfortable hunting boots on right now, and laced up tight to support my ankle). That or just start upping my Adderall dose till I feel no pain. j/k

I dunno, when I say "really hungry", I mean I could take out two big homemade burgers and not feel stuffed. And my definition of big homemade burger involves ~10oz of ground chuck. So I'm looking for some volume here, and thats a lot of carrots to peel.

Drink a pint of water at least, and when you finish, make sure you warm down properly.

Best thing to eat is something that isn't too stodgy or heavy, and wait about an hour after before you eat. I generally find that sandwiches are the best, as they contain all the carbs and protein, but are only small

what should you eat??? .. you shouldn't eat anything!! ... if you are looking to loose weight you should be closely monitoring your diet, not trying to run (which, by the way, unless you are running something on the order of 5 miles a day, you prob aren't putting any sort of serious dent in your total caloric intake anyways)

Try out this site:

http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/Index.html

Please note that the number of calories that it estimates that you are burning per day is WAY over ... a reasonable estimate of how many calories you burn/day is 10x your weigh

Carbs/protein beforehand...esp. if it's a longer run. Protein afterward to rebuild the muscle.

And plenty of water throughout the day, too.

Better put that in your will, its hard to concentrate and/or talk with a sucking chest wound.

Just joking... I plan on aiming for a headshot, anyway.

And if I'm going to start a career as a sniper, I can think of no one better to use for target practice than Babs. Thanks for reminding me!

I am cutting back on food, however, running doesnt only burn calories, it ups your metabolism, meaning you burn more calories during the day even when you arent running. My problem that I am asking for help in is what food can I eat that will both make me feel full and be low in calories.
