So I was told to flash my bios but ...

I bought a couple of Duron 1600 CPUs along with a Shuttle MB. I neglected to read on the box that this board supports Duron up to 1400. I emailed support thinking maybe I could downgrade the speed, but they told me the new BIOS would be able to handle the Duron 1600. My question is, how would I go about flashing it if I can't even see what's on the screen? I get no display on the monitor and I hear a series of beeps.

A couple of times I was able to boot up but the board display the CPU as a 1200.

you would have to use a cpu that the board can handle with its current BIOS. will your BIOS allow you to change the multiplier? maybe you could scale it back, flash, then set it to full value.

yea thats what im trying to figure out. I think I have a slower CPU somewhere but why wouldnt it just downgrade itself? I think it did when it appeared as a 1200, but then it never came back up. I'll play with it again tomorrow.

If you can get into the BIOS, you can "throttle down" the cpu. Don't just let the system set the speed itself. What type of BIOS is it; Award, Pheonix, etc? Specifically what is the pattern and length of the beeps you are hearing? Knowing those two things can assist in diagnosing the problem.

This is weird but I'll have to play with it tomorrow. I setup the other motherboard which is identical to the one in question and I was able to boot that up. I noticed Duron 1200, but then changed the CPU frquency to 133 and upon rebooting I noticed the correct CPU speed. All is well, and I'll have to tinker with the other board.

I cleared the CMOS, but failed to unplug the power cord. Do I really need to unplug it?
