So I was looking at property in Nairobi, Kenya.

Inspired by our Kenyan American president, Ive been slightly interested in the country. They speak mostly English and are majority Christian. Unfortunately it does have all the perils you would expect out of an African nation, which frankly is becomming a worldwide phenomenon.

Land can only be leased from the government for up to 99 years, not purchased. For around $22,000,000 Kenyan shillings (about $268,000) you can 'have' this:

Although it looks good on paper Im kind of skeptical of an unfinished property in a foreign country.

Is Kenya some new hipster hot-spot that I haven't heard about? A quarter mil for that house seems insane, considering the location. You can get a house that size on more land in some parts of the US.

Believe it or not I was reading that the government of Guatemala was about to collapse to narco-terrorists (a Narco state). They control large swaths and even recently appointed a lawyer to become attorney general who promptly struck down several anti drug smuggling laws. The president regained control of the country temporarily and supposedly undid his handiwork.

I only point this out because recently HGTV ran a recent episode of House Hunters International there. This nice American couple purchased nice beach front property on the cheap......no wonder!

Why does that look good on paper? You can get just as much house in the US with even more land involved than 1/4 or 1/2 acre. I think that Detroit would be better to live in than Kenya; compare it to what you can get for a quarter mil in Detroit even. (And, there are nicer areas than Detroit in the US with similarly depressed property values.) Hell, in my county, it was only 2 years ago that the average cost of land finally exceeded $1000 per acre.

Karen is a nicer suburb of Nairobi. With a walled perimeter topped with razor wire, and a 24/7 rotation of askaris (guards), you would be completely safe. You can hire a guard for about $30/month. They don't have gun-toting gangs roving the area. Most theft is a crime of opportunity.
