Putt-putting along I was and alas! My czech engine light comes on. So I drive a few miles home, and check my oil. Instead of a light coating of oil along the side of the dipstick tube thing I see that it is covered in what looks like dijon mustard. I pull my dipstick all the way out, and more dijon mustard.



What the crap did I do?

Sure sounds like it. You need to do a leakdown test. Basically you put air into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole with a special fitting. Then turn the motor by hand until the valves are closed for that cylinder. Look in the radiator for Air Bubbles .. if you see them, head gasket is shot. You will need to do this on all the cylinders as it may be blown on only 1 or 2 of them. And if it did blow, depending on how far you drove it that way, the main crank bearings may now be bad and the crank will need polishing and new bearings.

It's probably time for the OP to decide if he wants to dump a bunch of money into the car or not.

At a minimum its going to need a headgasket and the head magnafluxed and probably shaved. And as bruceb said, the bearings may be damaged depending on how long the gasket was leaking before you noticed.

What you will need to do is pull the head and replace the head gasket. While in there you can rebuild the turbo and replace the timing chain with a cut link one.



I had a Turbo 900SE Saab and the old owner blew the head gasket and kept driving it. It gunked up the turbo and made a mess. I replaced all the above and drove it over 10k before I sold it. It was a 5 speed and wife can only drive Auto. That main bearings are probable ok. Mine looked like they were new even though the engine locked up when all the gunk in the piston rings dried.

Don't forget to change the engine oil & filter at least twice after replacing the head gasket to clear out any coolant and gunk.
