The only difference between a 700w and 700wx is the extra 32MB of program memory. It makes a huge difference though.
The 700w/wx are the CDMA versions, the 750v is the GSM version. It's not worth switching to a GSM carrier since Cingular's high-speed network is so small at the moment. Everyone will be going to a derivative of WCDMA in the next couple of years anyways so it's all about to shake up again.
I'm not the best person to ask about the clunkyness. My last 4 phones have consisted of a Toshiba 2032SP, Hitachi G1000, PPC-6600 and the Treo 700wx. Honestly, I think the 6600 is a better design but the Treo is way better than the 2032 or G1000. If you're coming from a standard cell phone it will be a bit bulkier.
I used a 6700 for 8 days when my 6600 died. It was plain awful. The Treo 700wx thumps it in almost every category. It's a better phone and a more responsive PDA. The main advantages of the 6700 are the 320x240 screen (Treo is 240x240) and integrated WiFi. I honestly haven't missed the screen resolution too much, although coming from the 6600 the screen on both the 700wx/6700/i730 are painfully small. The downside of the square screen is that you have to crop or resize videos to fit. The lack of WiFi on the 700wx is not a big deal at all. It's just as quick for me to put a SDIO card in the 700wx (leftover from my 6600) than it was to go in to the wireless manager on the 6700 and turn the WiFi on. If you live in an EV area, you won't miss WiFi at all. I use it sometimes at work to access stuff on the internal network.
Nice things about the 700wx:
Today screen dialer. Coming from a long history of PPC Phones, this was difficult to get used to, but works great once you're used to it.
Microsoft Voice Command and Sprite Backup INCLUDED FOR FREE. Say hello to seventy dollars of software included in the box. Good software too.
Full size SD cards. Cheaper than MiniSD and available in larger capacities.
Keyboard backlight is much better than new 6700's (blue backlight) and even better than the 6600's. Old 6700's with a white backlight make look just as good though.
Treo has more available Program memory and Storage memory than the i830 and 6700.
Palm customizations to WM5 make it snappier and easier to use than the standard WM5 install used on other phones (I'm looking at you HTC).
Extended battery fits within the stock cover. Lookup a picture of the 6700 extended battery. BABY GOT BACK.
Microphone is SENSITIVE. People on the other end can hear almost everything going on.
NO FLASHING LED. Except if you have alerts or something. There's no service light flashing to annoy you.
HARDWARE SILENCE SWITCH. Slide it to the side and no sound comes out. Automatically goes in to vibrate mode. No need to turn on the PDA to adjust the volume. This should be a requirement for any PPC Phone.
Speaker and speakerphone are loud and clear. The only other phone I've had thats been better is the 2032 but that's a whole other story all together. WAY louder than the 6700.
A lot of preprogrammed keyboard shortcuts. For example, holding down OK takes you to the memory control panel.
The standard Treo keyboard lock. You press the end key and then when you turn it back on, you have to press the center key. Works much better than the 6700's tap method.
Readily accessible accessories. Uses same as Treo 650. Available almost everywhere.
DOWNSIDES:
Video playback is wonky because of the 1:1 screen ratio
Bluetooth stack doesn't seem to support as much as the 6700 does. We've figured out how to activate VC over BT, but the microphone won't work so you still have to speak at the phone. Luckily, the microphone is so sensitive it picks up quite well if you're within about 6 feet.
Side button is press and hold only. Odd, I'd like it to be press. You can get software to customize it but I don't like doing that.
When you tap and hold the circle thats supposed to appear and go around doesn't... still works though but I liked the visual cue.
Extra step to get in to the dial pad. Today screen dialer works great until you need to punch in a number that requires you to spell something out. Then you need to go in to the dial pad to dial which is an extra step.
NO FLASH ON CAMERA. I miss it. Used it as a flashlight.
SUCKY PACKAGE FROM PALM. Other than MS Voice Command and Sprite Backup the package is extremely cheap. Coming from other PPC Phones, I'm used to at least getting a cradle and some method of carrying the phone out of the box. Both of these are missing from Palm's package. It just feels cheap.
While streaming audio I have been used to pressing the power button to turn the pda off and still have the music coming through. However, when you press the end key on the 700wx, which doubles as the soft power key, it kills everything. This means you need to map WMP's screen off function to another button (i use spacebar). Now, when you do this, the freaking lights on the keyboard stay on. They have no auto-off period. As long as music is playing the damn lights on the keyboard stay on. Someone has written a program to turn off the lights but you need to run it separately and its just a PITA. I end up leaving the backlight on the keyboard off all the time. It's not a big deal for me. The G1000 had no backlight on the keyboard and I used it just fine in the dark as well so you just have to learn the keyboard layout.
Phew... anyways, good luck with whatever you choose.
