SO I was just reading about the Treo with Windows Mobile

So I was reading on a phone review site about the new treo 700w/wx and it was saying it only come with 32MB of physical memory and no wifi! omg.

is this true - if so that seems like a deal killer - even though its so sleek and small form factor.

do you guys know of a small formfactor smartphone - one you can actually carry in a pocket rather then belt clip?

The W/WX, and also the P, have 128MB of on-board memory; 64MB available to the user. That's not much of a deal, because they all have a memory card slot. I have a Treo 600 with a 512MB card. Most Palm or WinCE apps are small.

The complaint I heard was that when programs have memory leaks or whatever - your ram gets eaten up super fast - and that most people had to reboot their windows treos like 4 times a day to clear up RAM.

Can you use the Windows Treo with a MAC? (Dont have one - just curious)

FTW. The day I buy a PDA with Windows on it is the day -actually no, I can't think of any possible circumstance where that could occur. Hm.

Yes, but you have to use 3rd party software that does a workaround.

Okay, so don't buy the Windows version. Pick up one of the 700s with the Palm OS on it. I've been using the Palm OS for about 7 years now; Palm Vx, to a Kyocera QCP-6135 and now my Treo 600. I think it's a great OS for a handheld device. Try one out at the phone store for 10 minutes and you'll be hooked.

The 700P has a greater resolution screen, too! Built in voice recorder is very nice. That's what I miss in my 600.

hrmmm - I used to have an oooold palm back when color screens first came out on the IIIs... from what I remember the OS was simplistic but lacking in a lot of substance. That was then though.

Can you sync with outlook and stuff in Palm OS?

Ah, a Palm IIIc, huh? 😉

Yes, absolutely. Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Tasks all sync up to the Palm OS device.

The Palm OS has been through some changes since the IIIc. It's much more efficient and can multi-task. Remember the jump from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95? 🙂

Now you've got me thinking about pulling the trigger on a 700! 🙂

I don't know where you're reading crap about the 700wx. Seems like you're reading about the 700w and getting confused.

If you're a Verizon user then you're stuck with the 700w. I would recommend a 6700 or i730 over the 700w. The 700wx, OTOH, kicks major ass and is the best WM phone available for Sprint and Alltel right now.

If Cingular carried the Treo 750v I would recommend that over a 8525 but they don't carry it yet.

www.ppcgeeks.com and www.pdaphonehome.com FTW.

cool thanks for the extra links - yea im a Sprint user - so it would be the wx.

Is there that much of a difference between the w and the wx?

Also is the treo worth getting over switching to cingular and something so I can use SIM cards?

Yes, the 700wx is CDMA and is offered through Sprint's website for 199 i think

the treo 700wx comes with more memory than i know what to do with, plenty of ram, and i have a 4gb sd card.

with EVDO, wifi is obsolute. I had a phone with both, i never ever used wifi. There is basically no speed difference and wifi just killed the battery.

The treo 700wx, imo, is the best phone out there, that being said, the treo 700w sucks because it has so little ram.

Is it easy to dial phone numbers/talk with - like is it worth it as a phone - cause I use the phone more then I text. I just want a wx to be able to put my homework into during class.

Also - how clunky is it? (in real life - i see the dimensions on the site and a i held it in the store - but for day to day use i.e. sticking it in your pocket)

The only difference between a 700w and 700wx is the extra 32MB of program memory. It makes a huge difference though.

The 700w/wx are the CDMA versions, the 750v is the GSM version. It's not worth switching to a GSM carrier since Cingular's high-speed network is so small at the moment. Everyone will be going to a derivative of WCDMA in the next couple of years anyways so it's all about to shake up again.

I'm not the best person to ask about the clunkyness. My last 4 phones have consisted of a Toshiba 2032SP, Hitachi G1000, PPC-6600 and the Treo 700wx. Honestly, I think the 6600 is a better design but the Treo is way better than the 2032 or G1000. If you're coming from a standard cell phone it will be a bit bulkier.

I used a 6700 for 8 days when my 6600 died. It was plain awful. The Treo 700wx thumps it in almost every category. It's a better phone and a more responsive PDA. The main advantages of the 6700 are the 320x240 screen (Treo is 240x240) and integrated WiFi. I honestly haven't missed the screen resolution too much, although coming from the 6600 the screen on both the 700wx/6700/i730 are painfully small. The downside of the square screen is that you have to crop or resize videos to fit. The lack of WiFi on the 700wx is not a big deal at all. It's just as quick for me to put a SDIO card in the 700wx (leftover from my 6600) than it was to go in to the wireless manager on the 6700 and turn the WiFi on. If you live in an EV area, you won't miss WiFi at all. I use it sometimes at work to access stuff on the internal network.

Nice things about the 700wx:
Today screen dialer. Coming from a long history of PPC Phones, this was difficult to get used to, but works great once you're used to it.
Microsoft Voice Command and Sprite Backup INCLUDED FOR FREE. Say hello to seventy dollars of software included in the box. Good software too.
Full size SD cards. Cheaper than MiniSD and available in larger capacities.
Keyboard backlight is much better than new 6700's (blue backlight) and even better than the 6600's. Old 6700's with a white backlight make look just as good though.
Treo has more available Program memory and Storage memory than the i830 and 6700.
Palm customizations to WM5 make it snappier and easier to use than the standard WM5 install used on other phones (I'm looking at you HTC).
Extended battery fits within the stock cover. Lookup a picture of the 6700 extended battery. BABY GOT BACK.
Microphone is SENSITIVE. People on the other end can hear almost everything going on.
NO FLASHING LED. Except if you have alerts or something. There's no service light flashing to annoy you.
HARDWARE SILENCE SWITCH. Slide it to the side and no sound comes out. Automatically goes in to vibrate mode. No need to turn on the PDA to adjust the volume. This should be a requirement for any PPC Phone.
Speaker and speakerphone are loud and clear. The only other phone I've had thats been better is the 2032 but that's a whole other story all together. WAY louder than the 6700.
A lot of preprogrammed keyboard shortcuts. For example, holding down OK takes you to the memory control panel.
The standard Treo keyboard lock. You press the end key and then when you turn it back on, you have to press the center key. Works much better than the 6700's tap method.
Readily accessible accessories. Uses same as Treo 650. Available almost everywhere.

DOWNSIDES:
Video playback is wonky because of the 1:1 screen ratio
Bluetooth stack doesn't seem to support as much as the 6700 does. We've figured out how to activate VC over BT, but the microphone won't work so you still have to speak at the phone. Luckily, the microphone is so sensitive it picks up quite well if you're within about 6 feet.
Side button is press and hold only. Odd, I'd like it to be press. You can get software to customize it but I don't like doing that.
When you tap and hold the circle thats supposed to appear and go around doesn't... still works though but I liked the visual cue.
Extra step to get in to the dial pad. Today screen dialer works great until you need to punch in a number that requires you to spell something out. Then you need to go in to the dial pad to dial which is an extra step.
NO FLASH ON CAMERA. I miss it. Used it as a flashlight.
SUCKY PACKAGE FROM PALM. Other than MS Voice Command and Sprite Backup the package is extremely cheap. Coming from other PPC Phones, I'm used to at least getting a cradle and some method of carrying the phone out of the box. Both of these are missing from Palm's package. It just feels cheap.
While streaming audio I have been used to pressing the power button to turn the pda off and still have the music coming through. However, when you press the end key on the 700wx, which doubles as the soft power key, it kills everything. This means you need to map WMP's screen off function to another button (i use spacebar). Now, when you do this, the freaking lights on the keyboard stay on. They have no auto-off period. As long as music is playing the damn lights on the keyboard stay on. Someone has written a program to turn off the lights but you need to run it separately and its just a PITA. I end up leaving the backlight on the keyboard off all the time. It's not a big deal for me. The G1000 had no backlight on the keyboard and I used it just fine in the dark as well so you just have to learn the keyboard layout.

Phew... anyways, good luck with whatever you choose.

LOL to put your homework into! I thought you wanted it for email. You won't use it for homework, and I'll have to say "I told you so". Not worth it carrying around a huge phone just so you can "put homework into it".

By homework I mean scheduling. I am in need of massive organizing and reminders - I am always forgetting meetings and assignments - so i figured a pda/phone would be a good thing to get.

My Motorola MPX220 (which is getting pretty banged up) is 2 years old and has bluetooth, Windows Mobile 5.0, same camera stats, miniSD for expansion..

I dont think its clunky but ive been using one forever...

Its really easy to dial. On the main page is a search box, just type whatever number is, it filters through your contacts and when a contact doesnt come up it switches it to numbers. and there is a nice speed dial on the main page.
