......the type of bread you would think isn't evil.

Nice, WHOLE WHEAT BREAD label...................

Ingredients:

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!!!

WTF!

Even if someone doesn't eat mcdonalds every day they can't even go into a grocery store and buy WHOLE WHEAT BREAD without MAN MADE SYNTHETIC F*CK YOUR HEALTH SUGAR being put into it!

WTF?

Where is one supposed to shop exactly to avoid unnaturally unhealthy things?

That's very surprising. Weird that it's so prevalent in USA, it's very difficult to find HFCS in any food in NZ, and when you do find it, it's almost always something made in USA. Yuck.

I swear, making bread is so therapeutic. Do it the old way, mix by hand, kneed by hand. Bread machines are for Frenchies.

The jury is still out on how bad HFCS really is for us. Most studies, at least the ones I've read, only focus on high fructose diets, but HFCS is different -- it's not actually has high in fructose as the name would imply.

It's because it's cheaper in the U.S. to use HFCS. Even without the subsidies, HFCS is dirt cheap to produce.

I'd like to taste something that has high fructose corn syrup that has been replaced with sugar to see if I can taste the difference.

The problem is that kind of fructose a completely different kind of sugar than forms of glucose. Your body pretty much converts it strait to fat from and cholesterol triglyceride's from what I've heard about it.

HFCS actually only has a little more fructose than normal sugar. The problem really isn't the HFCS, it's the diets of sugar coated sugar with a sugar center that is washed down with liquid sugar and with a sugar-filled dessert.

I lost 14 pounds the four weeks I lived in New Zealand. The food in the USA sucks in comparison. It took me the entire month of November to get used to eating the food in the USA again.

OP: Read all labels and see many products have corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils in them in the grocery store. Buy organic and stuff that you can read the labels easily.

If you don't want HFCS, buy bread labeled as ORGANIC. Jeez, none of my bread here has any.

EDIT: Forgot to add, most Wal-Marts actually have organic products in stock :p.

I was surprised when i saw HFCS in Orowheat bread that I buy. But I was thinking, the amount of HFCU in the bread must be very minimal compare to sugary snacks and what not. Am I correct to assume that?

"High-fructose corn syrup" is highly valued by food manufacturers. It's easy to transport in tanker trucks. It isn't susceptible to freezer burn, as is sugar. It has a long shelf life and keeps foods from becoming dry. It gives bread and baked products a wonderful color http://www.noweightgaincookbooks.com/worse_than_sugar.htm

HFCS makes foods such as bread and breakfast cereal "brown" better when baked, and gives chewy cookies and snack bars their soft texture. It also protects freshness. HFCS actually inhibits microbial spoilage by reducing water activity and extends shelf life through superior moisture control http://www.hfcsfacts.com/
