About half a year ago, i bought a digital home theatre system that was on clearance for around $100, which included the dvd player, subwoofer, and 5 other speakers. Half a year later, I have bought a projector, and plan on using it in a larger room, thus upgrading to bigger/more powerful speakers, however. I was wondering if its possible that these larger/bigger speakers can be powered by the dvd player? it has a build in speaker terminals that can take the 5.1 standard speakers that it came with, but would i be able to replace those speakers, with higher end ones/bigger ones and still use this input? or would i have to buy a seperate AV Receiver?

I can't speak for your model specifically but low end Home Theater in a Box Receivers are rarely if ever good quality. While technically you could hook up new speakers, you will not get the full benefit of them by using a cheap HTIB receiver. You can get a pretty decent receiver like the Panasonic XR-57 for about $250 if money is a concern.

You'd probably also be in trouble as far as bass management and even getting a standard subwoofer output since a lot of those cheap ones come with a passive sub that's hooked up via speaker wire.

How much were you planning on spending total?

The front three speakers are the most important ones for HT. If you were to reuse something from the current set, you might consider using the speakers you have now as surrounds / rears, but getting a new receiver should probably be on your list of things to buy.
