It's a B&M business in Hawaii. Don't want to go into too many details because my "associates" wouldn't like me talking about it this openly. ;)

check out The Entrepreneurial Journey, by O'Malia

and a guy named Vesper wrote a whole bunch of books on entrepreneurialism too. New Venture Strategies, New Venture Experience, New Venture Mechanics, to name a few.

these books will help you quantify your resources and help you write up a business plan.

good luck!

I'm in San Jose right now, won't be back to oahu for 3 more weeks. What part do you live in?

I'd really like a good basic start-up kit. All the framework is laid out, I really just want a all-points coverage so I can see what holes I 've left in my plan.

Start with your chamber of commerce. Go there and ask them what local regulations you have to follow. They'll have a list of things you'll need...like a business license. I don't think you have to have one of those unless you make a certain amount of cash per year... Check into it and get yourself a tax number... :p

U.S. Small Business Startup Kit , Hawaii department of commerce, Dept. of Trade and Economic Development, Secretary of States Office. I would suggest a few appointments, one with a CPA and they will tell you what to do, the other with a lawyer.

Thanks sysadmin, that's along the lines of what I was looking for.

If anyone has any other suggestions, it is most definitely welcome!

Just to put every agreement between you and your associates into wiritng. A friend's brother is going through some heavy arguing after starting a business with a couple of buddies and not writing things out.

You might think something as simple as "equal shares" doesn't need paperwork, but a year later people can have different interpretations ("I put in 40% of the money, I should get 40%", or "I worked more hours I deserve a larger share" etc.)

Me and the wife were also looking into starting something up with in 6-8 months. This is some great stuff to help us get started as well. Thanks guys.

Here is my tip.. do you need to be bonded and have insurance? We found out the hard way what happens we some one does work for you and they're not bonded. :(

Write up your business plan and crunch the numbers first. Calculate to the best of your ability what your revenues, expenses, and free cash flow will be.

After you're done, take that plan and numbers, and crumple it up and toss it in the garbage. Rewrite everything again, only this time double your expenses and halve your revenues and cash flow. That will give you a better idea of what the true numbers will look like. Most business plans are unworkable because the assumptions are wildly optimistic. If the business plan still looks workable, then go from there. If it doesn't, consider abandoning the project altogether rather than lose a ton of money.

If you have any ?'s that I can help with, please PM me. I started my own computer buisness which has done quite well. I even had 2 full time employees at one point. You can bet I have run into every damn problem you will ever come across. Well, besides being audited. Thank God for that!
