So, I tried out Linux Mandrake 7.3 (Cooker), ...

Ohhhhhhhhhh boy! Did I ever do it this time. :)

The good news is that I have a near legacy-free Linux install in that I am only running the 2.4 kernel. glibc-2.2, and XFree 4.0.2 out of the door. I have dual-displays already churning on X with my now-supported Savage4 card.

Now the bad: Notice how I said X was running, but not KDE or GNOME or ICEWM or anything else. There is a reason why. They ain't running on top of X! I'm locked into 640x480 on both displays. But since I have no true WM running, I can only use one display. ROCK ON, DUDE!

I can only bring up an xterm, but I can start *some* X11 apps. Fo example, Netscape does work. I can have only one window up, as there is no WM to let me go betwixt windows.

Oh yeah, due to some weirdness in the install (has the flow of LM7.x installs, but nowhere near polished), I could only complete the install using default options ... which, yes, means that LILO has overwritten my quad-OS boot menu offered by Win2K's NTloader (still there, just not on MBR). I can alter the lilo menu, but I can't run 'lilo -u' due to a strange error. And it also seems that everything I do generates an e-mail to root.

Anyhoooo, I think a big chunk of my problems is related to a missing/bad libdb.so.X. Since I did the install over the network (from MIT to Va on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, hehe), I can't just pop in a CD and try it again.

Any pointers? If I can get it up and going, I'm sure that Mandrake 7.3 (this system already reports itself as this) could be very nice.

Have you tried browsing their mailing list archive? I'm sure other people are having the same problems as you... Always a good place to start.
