So I took the sims card from my SLVR

Booted it up without it... it said insert sims

Also emergency calls only... so referring to 911

Who picks up the signal for the emergency calls with no SIMS?

Just wondering will they send you a bill for it?😀

the carrier with a tower that your cell is using is required by law to pick up the tab. I'm [retty sure the govt compensates them though.

Isn't there a charge on the bill to subsidize that?

but then your simsless

he means generally there's an extra few dollars for "911 service charge"

not a bad idea to keep an old cell w/o a sim card in the car for emergencies

yeah... no need to pay 19.99 a month

just hope that the battery doesn't leak over time

First off, it's a SIM card. Secondly, do you only call 911?

Yeah 911 only

I have an old Nokia cell phone that had AT&T Wireless service on it a few years ago. Can I use that for 911 calls as it is, or do I need to remove the SIM card first?

I think that he just took the SIM card out of it just so see what happened.

Still... Taking a brand new $350 * cell phone apart and tinkering with it takes some serious guts.

* = Unlocked price, it's less with a service contract.

Um, all it takes to get the SIM card out is removing the battery, LOL

Any phone made within the last 10 years will dial 911 free of charge and use any avaliable tower. It doesn't matter if it has service or been deactivated.

Removing the SIM card isn't "taking apart and tinkering with" a phone. I'm not sure how the SLVR is contructed, but you usually just pop out the battery and slide out the SIM card. It's meant to be easily swappable. As a matter of fact, it's the first thing I do to guarantee my phones are unlocked (which are the only ones I get).

A few years ago? Was it a GSM phone or a TDMA phone? I don't believe TDMA phones have SIM cards.

Its not taking apart

Yeah they put it on for you but what about online orders

Nothing scary putting sims card in SLVR(and yes the sim is under the battery)

OK... I guess that it's easier than I thought it was. I would have figured that you would have needed a screwdriver or something. 😱
