It's your natural step when you sprint. It's also the natural step for a biped...hence why the balls of our feet are much more padded and sturdy than our heels.
Try running barefoot, sometime. You'll notice, even when you're jogging, that your step is considerably different than when you wear these massive shoes with ridiculously thick soles.
