im 18. Anyways i go in there just for a physical and to get some shot before i go to college.

Im like 6 foot or so like a normal height. Anywyas he measures it and i feel stupid as hell in the doctors office always. So i say "well looks like im taller then my parents now" and hes like oh how tall are your parents?

Im like my dad is 5-10 and my mom like 5-5. And then he tells me that children usually grow to be between there parents hieghts and that it is abnormal to be taller then both your parents (according to this guy i should be between 5-5 and 5-10)

So im thinking wtf is this guy talking about? because if that was true wouldnt we be shrinking over the years? I thought doctors were suppoesed to be smart right?

Mom's height needs to be measured proportionally in relation to the average female height. then use that proportion to translate it to a male height based on the average male height.

depends on what he means by MOST.

if he means almost all, then thats just wrong because after a few generations we would all be the same height.

He's right that "on average" the children are usually in between the height of the parents when you account for the average male height and average female height.. If children were usually taller than their parents, in a few generations everyone would be 7 feet tall.

Over thousands of years we've gotten slightly taller, so that tells us that while the children are usually in between the height of both parents, the average is only slightly more than the midpoint.

Edit- to make it easier to understand, think of it this way- take the average male height and average female height. Now look at your parents' height and see how much they deviate from the norm. Now average out their deviations, and see how much that average deviation compares to the average height for a person of your gender. That should come pretty close to their offspring's height, on average.

Example- Let's say the average male height in the US is 5'9. Let's say the average female height is 5'4. If your dad is 5'9 and your mom is 5'7, then you should be somewhere between average and 3 inches above average.

Remember, statistics are all about averages. This doesn't mean that every guy is 5'9, this just means that for every guy that's 5'10, there's a guy that's 5'8.

I everyone was the average of their parents height, then we'd all be 5'8".

Your doctor is sporting an extra chromosome.

Do you know what they call the guy that graduated at the bottom of his class at the worst medical school in the country?

Doctor...

Why would we be shrinking if that was true? Instead, we would all reach the same height.

The doctor is semi-correct. Most people are roughly the height of their parents. There is one major flaw though. He isn't taking into account better nutrition and better health care. These two factors generally add a significant amount to height. That is why men tend to be ~6 feet tall now when a hundred years ago, ~5 feet tall was common.

I'm pretty sure kids today are taller than their parents due to readily available vitamins, baby foods, etc, that doctors told mothers to give their kids (our generation). Also, mothers who breast fed their kids result in healtheir kids in general. There are studies out there that back this statement.

Incorrect.

The average height for a guy in 2002 is 5'9 1/2. The average height in the late 1700's was 5'8.

We aren't always getting taller, Northern europeans used to be taller in the 11th century than they were in the 1750's. It has a lot to do with how prosperous and well fed people were on average.

Another misconception is that people didn't live very long back then. When you hear that the average age was 40, that did not mean that people usually died around 40. It just means that a lot of people died from unnatural causes. The infant mortality rate was very high back then. Plenty of people lived into their 70's and even 80's.

Most Asian parents who move to America and raise children here will have children who are taller than them. Change in diet is mostly responsible for this. For people that have been here for a long time, the average height hasn't changed much in 50 years.

Hmmm. Didn't you just say the same thing? And no, the average height of an ~18 year old male in the US is NOT 5'9.5". Don't dilute the numbers by taking an average of all males aged 18 to ~100.

#1- 420Fred420 did not say that. I did.

#2. I said that you were wrong about people being ~6 feet tall now when a hundred years ago, ~5 feet tall was common. That is wrong. People are NOT on average a foot taller than they were 100 years ago.

Sorry wrong copy/paste. I will give you credit.

Ok make it 200. My point is the same. Males born now average about 6 feet tall. Males overall now average about 5'9.5". Thus, if the males now are taller than average, then by conclusion, older males are shorter than the average.
