So...I think I'm going to get a 40D

Probably not going to get one for a couple months though.

But I've been looking over everything and it sounds like a good camera for me.

I would love the MkIII but don't have $5000+ (additional batteries, etc) to spend at the moment.

I think the price and the specs of the 40D is good and would fit well. Then I would have my 20D as backup, and a 10D for...well nothing lol.

I need a second flash. I would get a 580EX II but it looks like Canon in their infinite wisdom have changed to a new battery pacl (CP-E4) for it vs. the CP-E3 that I have for my current 580. So will probably pick up a used 580 or something.

I'm going to end up spending like $2000 on stuff though. Oh well. Wedding this weekend will help :)

I am planning a 30D/40D combo for a wedding setup as well. They share the same batteries, grip, card types, lens mounts, etc.

20D/40D have identical batteries as well, but I would want a battery grip for both so I don't mind that they aren't the same.

Do any of you with the battery grip actually use them? I find that the extra weight is annoying and the battery on my 30D lasts long enough to carry it all day and shoot hundreds of pictures without the need for a recharge.

I bought one for my 30D but find myself leaving it at home most of the time...I think I'd rather just get a spare battery, charge it up and carry that instead.

I love the grip on my 20D. I have big hands, so I need a big grip, and the extra grip makes it more comfortable for me. I find just the camera without grip is a bit small for my hand, and the way that I prefer to hold a camera.

It's also nice for weddings - the less you have to change a battery, the better.

The BG is permastuck on my 30D. I love it for not needing it to switch batteries, and for portrait orientation.

I put the grip on the XTi out of the box and it has rarely come off. Yes it adds more weight, but IMO, I think its worth it since you have a vertical shutter (and associated buttons), double the battery life, and a better "feel/balance" to the camera, especially when using a telephoto. I liked the setup of the XTi the best, but it was small, so I got the pack and love it!

I have one and love it. It gives me more room for my hands! The buttons and battery life are good also.

I just got a new 580EX II flash to replace one that was stolen. It uses the same batteries as my old 580EX - 4 each AA batteries, and the compartment door is more secure. The case is different (tougher) - but aside from that - it's pretty much the same.

Here's a picture of it I added:
