So I think I'm about to plunge into the projector world.

I myself was thinking about going projection too. The projection screen I was looking at is 125" but the problem is this width of a screen will cover the left and right tower speakers I have when the screen Is lowered for movie watching. Anyone here have seen setups where the front L&R speakers are behind the screen? And if so would there be a noticeable drop in sound quality?

I have my center speaker behind the screen. I don't think it impacted sound quality much. I think I might have to make it a bit louder than before - and since the center speaker tends to have more speech that means the music / sound effects are now louder in comparison to speech. Hmm... I suppose I don't like that. But it hasn't bothered me so far.

I was thinking I could "re-adjust" my receiver with that little microphone with the screen down. It should recognize that the center speaker volume needs to be raised in comparison to the others. Haven't yet though.

i know you say you don't want a screen, and i'm nto sure how much these pictures do justice but i'll show you anyways since i had them on my phone.

here is a pic projecting on the yellow wall, no flash. notice all of the color you can see on the walls and floor reflecting.

here is a pic when i had the walls painted and the screen up, also have the speakers under the front, so all of that will also help with reflections.

it looked badass in both scenarios to me, but with the screen and darkened walls it is a different experience because it gives you that "window" feel that you are totally focused on one thing and can't really see around it. my setup is definitely not as pronounced as many theater pictures i've seen in that regards, but it's as close as i can really get.

but all in all, projectors take it to a whole other level as you now know!

they make screens that are acoustically transparent for that exact reason. ideally you want the front 3 speakers behind the screen, but many people don't have the setup where that is feasable. you will see absolutely no loss in sound quality with those from what i've read about them.

Pictures are tough, but I see what you are saying. I put some pics below; I can definitely see I need to paint the little side wall on the left a darker colour because there is reflection there. I will also have better blackout shades on the right (all of the components below the picture need to be organized as well of course, just waiting for the TV to go)

I want to get all of those adjustments in place before I move toward a screen just to see how good that will look on its own. As I said though, watching it as is, I think it looks pretty fantastic in cinema mode with a very slight bump in the gamma.

I'll post more pics once I have those changes in place.
