So I think I might get my dad a MacBook today...

_______ keep on coming to his room and using his pc and for theumpteenth time ended up loading it with porn and viruses and crap so he just told them to keep it. Now he doesn't have anything really.

Needless to say, the story itself is much more dramatic, even more so than TNT between 8-11pm, but whatever...

Point is he is basically a n00b with computers and has always had really bad computing experiences with desktops and I wanted to change things up a bit with a laptop that he can take with him to work and such.

I was thinking a vanilla Macbook with iWork. He is studying to be a paramedic so I'm sure he'll need it for online courses (he has to go to the library to take them right now) but for the most part just has a CDL-related job and I want to give him something interesting.

I was thinking of a Lenovo at first but he has so much trouble with XP that I figured it might be time for a change. I tried Ubuntu on another POS pc for him that I let him borrow and he seemed to like it, so hopefully this will be only improve upon that.

Anyone have any comments?

I'm planning on taking him to the apple store( he has only seen a macbook once before and thought it was "chivo" (cool) so I guess if he likes it I will surprise him by telling him to pick which one he wants for his birthday😀

Only issue right now is internet. He is renting a room someplace without phone or cable, and since the macbook has no express slot I might have to spend time getting the only usb ev-do adapter out there (sprint) to work with OSX. As long as it amounts to less time than I spent with Orinoco, atheros, and other evil chipsets , specifically the drivers, under linux, I will be fine with it...

oh, and I will make sure __________ don't touch his laptop....I'll kick their collective asses if they do😛

***update***

I got him a mac mini, flashy speakers, he whole mighty mouse and keyboard dealy, applecare, iwork, etc.

To say the least, he was floored....

Until he saw FrontRow...

.. at which point his once inocent remarks turned into a furry of explitives as he grasped for words to describe how awesome he thought it was as it played a tune (with album art) by the band Sweet.

I am writing this post on the min right now😀

now I want one😀

not if you had to wait like 2hrs for everyone to show up LATE (long story)to your BD party last night😱

he ended up pretty happy after it got started though😀

He got a nice Wenger watch among other goodies...of course, I intend to one-up them all...

muwahahahaha:evil:

I just recently made the switch to apple. Been a Microsoft man since DOS 5.0

Tried OS X for two weeks and it convinced me to switch. So I have a hackintosh for my desktop and I puchased a Macbook as my laptop. Never looked back. Still have a Windows Server running but I will probably swich that to linux when I get the chance.

Sounds like a good idea to me! But, even if the MacBook sits on top of a desk for 95% of the time and "_____" probably won't use it - it still is a laptop that can be carried away so I recommend to activate the password protection in the boot screen. If you don't think your dad should be able to install new software, create a second account right from the start.

You can find a list of recommended OS X software here. For example, you could save some 100 MB of disk space by de-installing all language packets except English and Spanish with DeLocalizer.

I don't have experience with EV-DO peripherals so regrettably I can't help there.

yikes, $60/month for EVDO + card? No way to get cable/internet? Maybe one of his neighbors is 'friendly'

Before you buy, have you thought about if he'll like the OS? Many people are used to Windows and want just that.

Good point. No sense in spending $1k if he doesn't like or won't get used to the Mac OS.

I'll have to agree, frontrow is a pretty cool piece of software, although I haven't touched it or my remote since about 3 days of my purchase... I bought my Macbook pro in november and have been using OSX almost soley since then. (I have windows installed, although it's being used very rarely)

Also, check out this program called Cha-Ching. It's a money management program, I just found out about it today, and purchased it. It's quite amazing, and very easy to use.

That's a great, generous gift! I am typing this on my week-old MacBook and I'm really enjoying it. I had planned to do the Boot Camp thing but now I'm not so sure I see the point. Actually I am setting up Boot Camp tomorrow on my mom's brand-new iMac, and look forward to seeing how it works.

Mac Minis rock, I loved mine. Now I just need to convince my wife I need another one plus a T7600 😉
