So i surfed Washington state today....

Previous surfing expeditions: Florida (both coasts), Bahamas, NC,NJ,SC,GA,NY,IN,MI,WI,OH,IL, Canada, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Erie, and Costa Rica (Caribbean and Pacific).

Today i finally surfed the Pacific in the Continental US :D.

I surfed in Westport Washington today, and being from Florida i was only thinking about great white sharks when i was in the water. Looking around a couple hours into my session, i was looking around the water and a seal pops up with a head bigger than mine about 6 feet away. Maybe some people are used to them, but i have never surfed where seals are, so after cleaning my wetsuit out i had a great day. 4-6 ft and glassy. :)

I dont want a cookie, i just thought id share my hobby with others :).

Nice. I bodyboard in Northern Cali, and you are scared of sharks?
What kind of board do you surf? Are you a short board ripper or a a long board cruiser?

BTW, I know a guy who had his board bitten by a seal, dont just put those guys off to the side cause they do have teeth!

how was it? i'm in seattle, thinking about taking surfing up this summer...

I live in Seattle too, it took about 2:30 (maybe less, we screwed around on the way there) to get there. It was alot of fun, it gets expensive though with the wetsuits and surfboards. Let me know if i can help.

Im not really scared of sharks, but growing up in Florida i only had to worry about small sharks. I have read alot about great whites up in the PNW and norcal.
See no evil, hear no evil, ............

:D

No fin on the bottom of mine. A lot of the more "surf-styled" kayaks (Cobra Wave With, Perception 5-0, Ocean Rrrapido) do have retractable skegs, but not the Yak Board that I use. But it's got a bit of a molded-in keel which is good enough to keep you in a relatively straight line, but doesn't stop you from making a cut.

Truth be told, the Yak Board isn't the world's greatest surfing boat. It's famous for being hard to tip and easy to turn, but it's also well-known for being SLOW.

But, right now my kayak has to "live" at my parents' condo, which has no storage at all. I had to find a boat 8' or less so that it can stand up against the wall. The Yak Board was the only one I could find short enough!

Next summer I will most likely have a house, so I will be looking for an upgrade. :D

You should be able to get a decent used board for ~$150 just to get you started. I'm not sure what weight wet suits you need up there....
But you can get used wet suits, too....

Winds generate waves, Text.
Sometimes they can get pretty good.

Water was around mid 50s from my guess, i was hot in my 6/5/4 with glove and booties, not need for a hood today.
