So I started watching The Office for the first time (from the beginning)

Is it just me, or is this show really depressing? Sure, it's arguably one of the funniest shows I've ever seen - the LOL quotent is extremely high - but I sometimes feel bad for laughing at some of the horrible things Michael does to himself and everybody else.

And is it just me, or is *everybody* a big loser on the show? Even Jim and Pam, who appear to be the most normal people, seem to really have issues. I'm also guessing that Jan, who appeared to be stable at first, turns into a sex-crazed pain in Michael's side verrry soon.

Onto season three.

OP, yeah, I have found The Office to be very depressing, too. It cuts pretty close to the bone, and a lot of that stuff really isn't exaggerated very much. You constantly get reminded that your job is a LOT like theirs. But I keep watching because it is also extremely funny and I want to see what happens to the characters.

I've never sat down to actually watch it. I'm eventually going to get out of this industry and hopefully into the medical field in about two years. This office type setting isn't my thing.

It's called comedy.
If they didn't have issues there would be no conflict and therefore no situations that could be funny.
Thats why a normal office is boring.

The UK version is very funny too. The first ep. is the same word for word in the US version.

I have no clue who you are talking about... David Gest is not in either 30 Rock or Arrested Development.

nah, some of the recent ones are quite good. It DID have a spot at the end of season 2 and into season 3 where it was getting too drama.

but that never happened. it is still good, so it is safe to start watching, if you're so afraid.

I also like 30 Rock. Never liked Arrested Development. (which is indeed full of drama. the irony in your post...)

The difference between Arrested Development and The Office drama is that Arrested Development's drama is completely off the wall funny character development, where as The Office tends to be serious and there isn't usually (unless it's in michaels case) much comedic value to it.

The difference between Arrested Development and The Office drama is that Arrested Development's drama is completely off the wall funny character development, where as The Office tends to be serious and there isn't usually (unless it's in michaels case) much comedic value to it.

In your opinion that is. Every character in the Office has its place and all of them are funny in one way or the other. Dwight is hilarious in a pretty outrageous way. Pam and Jim's pranks on Dwight are pretty awesome. The other characters bring their own charm to the comedy as well.
