so I spent a little time with the reference 980 today...

I have a 780 Ti GHz and out of the box it clocks effortlessly to 1215MHz and that is without touching volts or clocks. Still don't see a meaningful upgrade.

I think someone would be crazy to upgrade from a 780ti to a 980, but the 970/980 is a no brainer for someone running older cards.

Yield is only 1 part. Wafer cost have gone down as well.

Sorry I missed this post on my mobile. That's a great point. I was assuming a flat cost per wafer and looking to justify a lower "cost" to nVidia with purely yield improvements. With wafer cost reductions coupled with yield improvements I could see your original guess being possible. Its pretty amazing how wafer costs come down so rapidly. I wonder what they are currently.

*Also, sorry for the mini hijack. I really, really would love a blower style 970 after seeing results like these. Are there any that exist?

970 blower cards do exist, however they are based on the GTX670 style blower.

EVGA however looks to be willing to maybe make a GTX970 blower card with the GTX980 reference cooler if the demand is high enough.

no matter what I put my voltage on it will drop down to 1.187 after a bit even if its no where near TDP limit. 1465 seems to be the highest oc I can do long term at that voltage.

I haven't even bothered with adding voltage yet. My card settles down to 1.187 too after she gets warmed up.

To be honest I think I'm going to get rid of the card. It pains me to see my 290x Lightning sitting on my desk knowing that it isn't worth squat yet in most titles is barely slower and even faster in some of the graphics heavy ones.

The only draw back is power consumption which I couldn't careless about other than felling like I'm doing my part for mother nature, lol.

20-25% on average faster isn't "barely" IMO. And the power draw, no matter how little you care, is pretty lopsided especially considering the faster performance. But I don't necessarily blame you for not wanting to keep the 980 regardless. You can get what -$250-300 for a used r9 290x? That's a steep price difference from the $550 GTX 980.

well at least you are getting the same voltage as me as I was a bit worried.

Barely faster is subjective. Right now, barely faster means that settings haven't increased. The 290x isn't leaving much desired in the performance department and there are times when it is the faster card.

Don't get me wrong though. The 980 is an incredible card and worth the purchase when "upgrading" from something slower than a 780 or 290 class card.

IMO The 970 and 980 are worth upgrading to if you have a 290/290X on a 1080P screen. DSR makes it worth it. Poor man 4K without buying a 4K monitor...kind of, lol.

I would never go back to my 290 crossfire setup. The heat output reduction alone is worth it.

Not sure I would have gone for 970's over my 290's if DSR wasn't a feature of the GTX 9XX series.

If it were over here it would have gotten opened by now =)
well the ONLY reason I have not opened it is because if I do then I will have to keep it or exchange it for another if it has issues. it only has the vga replacement return policy. hopefully I wont have any trouble getting full refund if its not opened. lol I better ask tomorrow.

luckily my 970 had the regular return policy so they sent me pre paid return label and will even credit me back the original shipping I paid to get it to me since its defective.

I have a 295x2 out on loan too. My buddy wanted to "try" it out on his 4k and I haven't gotten it back yet.. bum =P

Toyota - I have to ask, how many 970's / 980's have you purchased so far lol?
one 970 and two 980s. I would have just kept the 970 if it had no issues. then once I knew it was going back I decided to treat myself to an actual upgrade and get the 980. I ordered the reference card first from Amazon and then saw the Strix at newegg and jumped on that. I thought about cancelling my reference card but they had already charged me so I said what the hell might as well try it. after looking at reviews the reference card is as good as the typical Strix card at ocing while using way less power.

tl;dr... 3 total :D

Hey Toyota, what voltage is your CPU at?

Hmmmmm.... I delidded mine and it did a good job at lowering temps, but it did nothing to increase OC without needing massive voltage. I'm running 4.0ghz @ 1.105v fixed right now. I think I needed something like 1.18v to get 4.2ghz stable. I was so disappointed by the huge jump in voltage that I didn't try any higher. I need to get a kill-o-watt to see how much power headroom I have left. I don't want to fry my precious 450 watt PSU. It was whining during this past summer when playing Metro Last Light on my GTX 780 @ 1189 core / 6900 mem.

Thing is I can't see why you'd buy one unless you have a pretty older weaker card. Its ridiculous that Nvidia didn't lead with Big Maxwell first. 256-bit isn't high end.
