So I slept in this morning...

"Hello, this is ___ with the Seattle Police Department"
"Yeah?"
"I was just calling to confirm you got notified that your car was recovered"
"..."

An hour later, me and a friend were speeding up to Lincoln Towing (open 24 hours, apparently) to check it out. Sure enough, there was my Toyota MR2...the one that was stolen late July last year...with NO apparent damage! The ignition seemed a little funny, and the battery was stone dead, but the body, interior, and so on seemed to have no new scratches or other damage. I guess I'm probably going to have to change the ignition and locks, but that's a small price to pay for getting your car back! Well, and they took the faceplace to my CD player, making it useless, but I could use an MP3 headunit anyway.

The car was a bit on the dirty side when I got it, but it cleaned up really well
The interior was new-looking as ever after a good vacuuming, so I guess they didn't smoke in it or anything lame like that.

Needless to say, I am one happy panda right now.

It's parked at a friend's LOCKED garage, and now the real work begins...I've got to transfer my insurance, sell the old car, update the registration, and perform a bunch of maintenance stuff on the car like changing the pads, resurfacing the rotors, changing the oil, flushing the coolant, and so on. Should keep me busy for a while...too bad the nice weather is going away next week.

Anyone want to buy a 1990 VW Golf for ~$1500?

Oh, wow! Congratulations! Specs on the car, 'cuz I might want to buy it.

<--- 21 and still driving his mom's minivan... gotta change that ASAP.

Orsorum:

1990 Volkswagen Golf, Wolfsburg edition
~127k miles
5-speed (changed the tranny fluid to Redline, and it shifts soooo much better)
Comes with a removable roof rack
Something like a 1.8L 4-banger...gets ~32 MPG on the highway
Cruise control, AC
handcrank sunroof🙂
NEW (well, a couple months old) Yokohama Avid T4 tires

It's really amazing how much crap fits in this car when you fold the backseat down.
PM for pics/more info.

Do you know what it was being used for all this time?

Not really.

For a month after it was stolen, I figured someone had just gone joyriding, and the cops would find it abandoned in a while. That made sense, because the car is a blast to drive, but somewhat rare and not that valuable for parting out.

After that, I figured it must have gotten parted out anyway, or driven into the middle of a lake, or something, and I'd never see it again.

When I got the call from the cops, they told me the car "looked undamaged", but I kept my hopes low since I wasn't sure...happily, they were right!

I guess the thief must have driven it until the registration expired (making it too dangerous to drive around). The plates were still on it, and there was even a full tank of gas. Hehe, sucker:evil:

Dude, un-rice that, and it might be a worthwhile car.

Name ONE thing on that car that is not stock.

AUDIO

bastard😛

Actually, speaking of that...
Do you guys know where to get a CHEAP tape deck (or, preferably, MP3 player) that's still decent quality?

Basically I need something that has radio and line in, so I can use my laptop to play music on long trips.

Good one James... seriously though, work on the material.

Good for you. Too bad it's still a Toyota MR2.

I'll take my street-legal go-kart that's 16 years old and still looks new, redlines at 7500RPM, and gets ~32MPG while maintaining an incredible standard of reliability, ANY DAY of the week.

Congrats. You got really lucky.

Or...

The thief is waiting for you to re-register before he steals it again.

j/k 🙂

Question...
If you've settled with the insurance company, who owns the car?
My wife had her truck stolen. The cops found it before we settled. It really didn't matter because it was a total loss. The insurance company got the truck.
Did you settle with the insurance company?
I just wonder what happens if an insurance company pays the claim and then the car is found.
Do I keep my car and pay back the insurance company?
ehh?
