so i setup my htpc, question on what you do with recorded video files?

so i record the daily show and family guy as well as southpark, although i only keep the later two, anyways the files for a half hour at top quality are 1.8gb

i'm guessing its in AVI? anyways what do you htpc gurus use to compress the media center video files into something smaller like divx? and how do you do it?

remember, i ust media center to record the files, my tv card is the haupauge mce150

You can use Vdub to compress the files down using DivX or Xvid. I like Xvid.

The reason they are 1.8GB is they are uncompressed. Compressing on the fly (while recording) isn't a good idea, because that would obviously increase the amount of resources your system is using, and would most likely cause dropped frames. Also, giving you an uncompressed video file allows you to choose how you want to compress it, with you being given the highest quality to work with before encoding.
