So, I scored a Mac from work...

It's an older Ti Powerbook G4. 667mhz, 1gig of ram, and a 45gb hard drive. The screen is barely functional, as the backlight only works because I was able to splice together 2 of the wires between the screen and the main part. That's not even considering that the hinges are both broken.

So I've just got it underneath my small printer, hooked up to my 2001FP.

Running 10.3.9. As expected, it's quite a bit slower than the dual 1ghz G4 I have at work, but I find it has plenty of speed for my web surfing needs and desire to delve more in to the OSX world.

I'm really drawn to the appeal of Expose. I like the dock as well (I don't care for all the emulators for XP).

Aside from this obviously not being a gaming machine, I'm quite surprised that this little 667mhz machine doesn't "feel" slow.

I might have to look in to a Mini for everyday use, and reserve the A64 machine for gaming/multimedia use.

fix it up, sell it, and buy a new one or buy a thinkpad.

I'm thinking about a Mac Mini. I already have a X41 🙂

They're terribly slow if you run anything over 1280x1024. I have one and I regret the purchase due to the paltry amount of vram it has. If they ever release a solid model with 64+mb of vram then it will definitely be a viable option, however. Intel macs are rumored to be coming out at Mac World San Fransisco on January 12th, so I'd wait until then at least just to see. Intel macs will definitely be out by August of this year, after the Apple world wide developer's conference in early summer. 🙂

I really dont care for mac, I use a mac 8 hours a day at work for video editing, crap like that, and I really hate the mac interface, its just not for me. I like having all my PC usability, and the fact that I dont have to hold down an extra button to right click helps (yes I know I can use another mouse) but, I just dont like the feel of the mac (i use a power mac G5 with dual 1.8s) and the other day when I was scanning slides the system itself, not counting other programs, was using 1.25 GIGABYTES of ram WTF!?!?! I have 2gbs and only had 48mb left to spare. talk about a resource hog.

OSX allocates RAM in strange ways...when the system may appear to be consuming large amounts of memory it is in fact just sitting there waiting to be filled.

I don't have enough technical knowledge to explain it, however.

Yeah, 2 of my team members are going to Mac World (I prefer to wait for TechED, went this year in Orlando).

This little guy is running 1600x1200 on my 2001FP. I notice it's a little choppy when I minimize, as it's on the genie effect right now.

But how much wouldn't a 1.42ghz and 32mb of VRAM be enough to overcome something like that for everyday web use, kids games, and the like?

Im running 1680x1050 with my 1.42 Mac Mini on my Dell 2005fpw... Its no speed demon but certainly not slow for most instances. Runs CS2 perfectly fine.

Just make sure you have 1gb ram in there...

WTF?

That's what I was thinking, but it was already set up like that, along with the combo drive. I certainlly wasn't about to say, "whoa whoa whoa, hold up. There is NO way I'm taking that laptop if it's got 1gb of ram in it. Drop it down to 512mb and you've got yourself a deal!"

Currently we have a few 15" Powerbooks deployed, but all together we only have a dozen or so mac users (out of about 600). Majority of them are on dual 2.5ghz G5's though.
