So I RMA'd my 6800GT and that wasn' t the problem..

so when i turn on the computer, all i get is the 'not receiving signal from computer' message on my monitor and nothing else. My monitor works fine on the backup comp that I'm on now. So I RMA'd the 6800 GT and receive dthe replacement toady (with bf; 1942 I might add, thank you evga). Unfortunately I get the same message when I try to boot up. So that pretty much leaves just the mobo or cpu correct?

Do you have another monitor to try? What about another video card? Is the monitor plugged into the video card all the way? Is the video card completely seated in the motherboard? Also, check the pins on the video cable and make sure none are bent on either end.

What were you doing when the problem started happening?

the computer was just idling when this happened...

i already rma'd the video card, though i dind't check the new one. This monitor is the one i was using with that computer, it works fine with this computer though. i tried removing the sticks of ram, and no luck usingjust one or the other.

I don't know how to test a psu...

You didn't check the new video card? That message sounds the kind I get when there's no video signal to the monitor. You should try the new card.

You've ruled out the monitor - that's a good step. Did you use the same cable? If so, the cable is ruled out.

You can use this to test a power supply:

Use memtest86 to test the memory. I would start by checking the new video card.

Edit - I forgot to ask - does anything happen when you press the power button? Do the fans spin?

I had a similar problem, can most likely be your power supply. If its 12 volt rail isn't strong enough, then it wont post. But it could also be the ram or cpu, I'd find some other PSU to use and see of that works

Normally, its the message when the video cable has been disconnected.
Is something wrong with the monitor cable?

If it's an evga you might want to just rma it again. My orginal 6800gt worked for a while then broke so I rma'd it. The replacement I got did the same thing you mentioned so I rma'd that one too. The next card I got worked and is still working fine.

Post full specs including the brand/model of PSU, all cards and drives and stuff, and your favorite ice cream. 😀

lol yah, i Should've posted more details.
EVGA 6800 GT, Asus a8v mobo, AMD64 3500+, Thermaltake quietpower 450, 1 gig of corsair value ram, and a 250 gig samsung deathstar, my favorite ice cream is chocolate, although I prefer milkshakes.

The rig worked fine for the first few months, although occasinally i would get the 'monitor not getting signal from cpu' message. This went away when I woudl reboot. About a month ago though I came back from letting it idle for like 20 minutes and that message was up and I haven't gotten a signal to the monitor since. All the fans spin, on the video card, and PSU, and processor.

To troubleshoot, I have an oooold gateway that I tried the monitor and cable with, and the monitor works fine with the Gateway. I tried using just one stick of ram, and then the other on my new computer, but that didn't change anything. I tried removing the video card and booting, but I got the warning shriek from my computer. I got the new video card from EVGA yesterday, and the exact same thing happens.

I have a multimeter, is there anyway to test the psu with that? This is such a pain because there's so many difeernt things it could be, thanks for the help so far though

This is important - if everything is still humming along in the computer when the message comes up, it sounds like just the video signal was lost but the computer is still "on". If you Ctrl-Alt-Del, does the system post, or do you still get the Video Not Found message?

If the machine runs for a little while and THEN the video poops out, it sounds like overheating. Could be the power supply not being able to supply the juice, or a fan on the video card not being able to keep up.

If you have a spare video card, or a friend that has one, you should try it and see what happens. Don't feel bad that you can't narrow the problem down quickly - these scenarios are toughies.

well it's right from bootup that the computer doesn't display anything on the monitor. i can't see what's happening obviously so i can't say anything about error messages. I dont' have any spares, but I did RMA the video card once. I'm trying to decide what to RMA next, mobo or processor? I don't think it's the PSU because all the LED lights sitll come on, and all the fans still work. side note: the num/scroll/capslock keys on the keyboard don't work as indicated by the LED's on my keyboard. Not sure if that helps at all.

In that type of situation my troubleshooting is always disconnect everything that isn't needed to get into the bios. HD, Floppy, any add on cards etc. Motherboard, cpu, video card and memory and pretty much nothing else. Have you checked for led's or other diagnostic codes. Not sure where that particular board shows things. Might try pluging speakers into the oboard sound if you don't normally have them. Some boards use voice error codes instead of or in addition to other error codes.

yah

also, i may try plugging in my speakers to the onboard...i do have audio post errors enabled ...ithe led on my mobo lights up and just stays lit so it's not spitting any errors out....and i already tried only conecting mobo, processor, ram and vid card, still no go

Can you try a different keyboard? That'd be my first step. If more than one keyboard exhibits this behavior, you know the problem isn't in the keyboard. If the motherboard isn't giving any sort of error codes, then it's probably the motherboard. Try the motherboard by itself and see if it gives error codes.
