So I received a Vivitar ViviCam 5105s for XMAS

I was planning on getting the Canon A520 for XMAS and then the 'rents got me two smaller presents and this camera. Did I get ripped? Never heard of Vivitar.

Thanks for any input,
Stu

P.S. Sorry if this should go in "General Hardware"..I was unsure.

Dang, that's not what I wanted to see. Should I try to have them take it back and shoot for the canon? I don't want to seem ungrateful, but I hate crappy electronics.

What would YOU do?

the moment you read them advertising digital zoom as a feature, you can immediately assume it's crap.

well no optical zoom really cripples it. i rather have a 3MP nikon/canon/casio/olympus/minota with optical zoom over yours any day.

Don't listen to these people saying keep it. If the people that bought it for you don't understand the word crap, o well. Return that bad boy while you still can and get the canon.

This guy is a winner. Will report back with results.

i would just take some pics and check whether the cam fullfills your needs (in functionality) image quality etc.

If it does what you need...then it doesnt matter what brand and how it's reputation...IMHO.

Anyway i do NOT think its a high-end camera....but then even my Canon S230 elph is not a high-end camera...for sure not just because it's "canon"...a pro-photographer would laugh at me as well at you 😉

no optical zoom really hurts this camera.....im pretty sure its not a bad camera, ive heard of vivitar before and they make some pretty decent stuff, but in this day and age you really want optical zoom if your gonna make proper use of a camera.

get outside, take some pics, play around with it for abit, if it does everything you ask of it then theres really no reason to change it....Canon do make great camera's but they're certainly not the last word in digital photography

The lack of any optical zoom, and the existence of a tiny amount of built in storage do not scream quality. Now, to be fair, this sucker probably stomps quite a few older cameras, just because the march of technology has been so relentless in this area. It doesn't give me a good feeling, though.

Sadly as a geek the safe route is to never, ever ask for electronics for gifts unless you provide explicit instructions - Make, model, etc. Even then you're still at risk of someone deciding it's all the same. As a rule I never ask for anything tech related.

I suppose the same is true for anything in which you are much more informed than the average consumer.

if you wanna pay the diff yourself.... go ahead.
otherwise it's what was in their price range and any photo is better than no photo.
Also 100x optical zoom has no relation to image quality...
