The misses and I were discussing a coworker's son being "harassed" in school for wearing a heavy metal band's t-shirt (Disturb'd for anyone that cares) to school and being mocked by fellow students and stopped by a teacher to let him know that it was "Satanic".

Link to the shirt (click on "ALBUM" shirt)

Now, I should have prefaced this whole thing by saying that we live in the buckle of the Bible belt in MS. I can't begin to count the number of times some stranger has asked me about what church I go to or tried to give me an on-the-spot sermon. I'm not even going to go into hymns being sung in school, still praying there too, and businesses with religious signs/messages/symbols boldly and proudly displayed.

So I go off on this rant (much like this one 😉 ) about how they should ban his shirt if they find it offensive.....along with every other shirt that displays a religious message too. She flips about how I am condoning cult killings, abuse, rape, murder, etc. The entire laundry list of church views/opinions/folklore about satanism. So I do a little research and show her that they are completely wrong in their opinions of the practice and that is it mostly just made up sh*t in movies and in sermons to scare people down the path of righteousness. Especially when I linked her to 1992 FBI investiation into Satanic Ritual Abuse the comes to the same conclusion. That's when the real fireworks went off.

Oh what a fun way to start the day.

How is that shirt satanic?
And yeah, the perception of satanists sacrificing animals/babies is just Hollywood shlock that sells.

Every time a teenager wears a heavy metal T-shirt, it incurs the wrath of god...in the form of a hurricane. Burn him!

lol, gotta love my husband, they only early morning convo involves the word "coffee"

I'm not so sure your wifes the problem buddy.

I never accused her of having the issue solely. 😉 Her part is that she thinks that it is ok to censor one group while allowing another free reign. Mine are too many to list.

I fail to see where the school forbid him from wearing the shirt, only one teacher, who does not neccessarily represent the views of the school. People are allowed to have opinions, even if they do not agree with yours.

What's funny is that when I was in high school, I was called into the Principal's office for my "satantic" images. Turns out, it was my necklace (ying-yang pendant.) The principle handed me a sheet a paper than "came from the superintendent" that dipicated all the "devil-worshipping" signs that schools should be on the watchout for.

Yes, there was a pentagram and goat's head on there, but there was also the yin-yang, the peace sign (labeled "broken cross,") the Star of David (WTF!), and then several random native american symbols that looked like tetris pieces. I kinda laughed and told him I was no satanist that most of these symbols were a joke, he said OK, but be discrete with your necklace. I said OK, then got up to leave. Of course, when I turned around, I was wearing my black jean jacked that had a giant ying-yang across the whole back. 😱

Stupid, close-minded, fear-mongering backwoods areas FTL. 🙁
