So I purchased an Annoy-o-tron...

😉

Considering my boss is in on it, and we're part of a different department, I don't have much to worry about. I'm only a student employee, other students have done much worse.

Quoted so the lawyers can read it.. I think the claim will be "hostile work environment"

Yeah, they are a tad expensive.

There are three modes, one is just a beep, the other is a high pitched squeal, and the last is a combo of both. I have the high pitched squeal on now, it's annoying.

It has probably gone off 3-4 times so far, she hasn't said anything.

I love the thank you letter 🙂

Dear friends at thinkgeek.com,

I recently acquired the "Annoy-A-Tron" from your web site. Actually, I acquired two, thinking that perhaps two devices might be necessary to truly splinter the minds of my friends and co-workers. How woefully did I underestimate this powerful tool.

I have watched this simple device transform an (until-now) mild-mannered colleague into a spitting, cussing, paranoid lunatic.

He has ordered all of the staff he supervises (not a small number) to locate the source of the dread beeping before doing anything else (but since they are in on the prank, they haven't been much help). So he waits, white-knuckles gripping the edge of his desk, anticipating the next beep.

He has set a timer on his computer to track the duration between beeps. It hasn't been much help.

My favorite quote so far, nearly bursting that vein on his temple as he shouted it: "That beep has been F***ING with me for HOURS now."

He has called the facilities department to schedule a maintenance worker to investigate.

He speculates that "they" might be doing air-quality testing in the building. This beep must be some device in the ducts detecting dangerous levels of asbestos in the air. Or worse. Radon? Aerosolized mercury? Legionella spores?

The beep means something. What does the beep mean? Is it a warning? It sounds urgent, doesn't it? It's telling us to do something. But what? Replace a battery? Call the authorities? Evacuate the premises? Scrub ourselves with disinfectant and put on haz-mat suits and call our families to give them our tearful goodbyes?

I imagine that soon he will begin to take things apart. He will methodically dismantle all of the electrical devices in his office, creating an unusually precise metaphor for what is happening in his psyche.

I am reminded what a thin and fragile thread keeps us attached to sanity. Today, this tiny little device helped me break a co-worker's mind, and I thank you for the sinfully pleasurable schadenfreude.

My best to you,
John

I just put it in my coworkers office. She is in charge of all the computer related stuff for her department (not my boss).

My boss and I continually "prank" her if you will. I'm excited to see how this one turns out.

I've used this device on co-workers with awesome results. Highly recommended, A++++

I will have to buy one of these. My one coworker loves hiding food in and around peoples desks (you DO NOT want to see what a banana looks like after 6+ weeks under a desk). Time to pay him back....

This looks hilarious. It's too bad I'm leaving my current job (well not really) otherwise I'd have a list of people to prank. OP you must keep us updated.

your evil..

i would kill you if you did that.

and probably put a cockaroach in your drawer as revenge.

well, then this is the prefect time to do the prank! What are they going to do? Ask you to leave earlier than you had already planned?

So, it has been in her office for about a week.

Initially, I had it set to the high pitched tone, it didn't seem to bother her much. On tuesday I changed it to the regular beep. Yesterday, supposedly, she was swearing up a storm and trying to find it. (I only come in on Tuesdays, Thursdays and part of Friday) Today it hasn't bothered her as much but she is complaining about it.

My boss said yesterday she had some dude looking for it, he took a peek under her desk (where it is hidden) and didn't see anything. First she thought it was her APC, she removed that from her office. Now she thinks it's coming from somewhere outside of her office, but in reality it's sitting directly under her keyboard. It's quite hilarious.

My boss and I are trying to contemplating whether to just leave it beeping or turn it off for a week or two and turn it back on.

We'll see.

I hid mine under the metal piece of trim on the top of the cube wall for about a week. I had 2 co workers going insane, each accusing the other that the beep was coming from the other person's cube.

Mayhem is great!

and why wont this be easy to find?

follow the noise, no?

the random interval between the beeps makes it difficult to time and locate, supposedly. i would buy one if it wasn't so expensive...

Guy I work with put one in my desk kinda behind my pc and out of the way, I heard it beep once and I was like 'what the hell was that?' then about 15 or 20 minutes later (he had it on the random function) it went off again and I knew right away what it was and called him out on it. Partially because it was a unique sound that didn't sound like anything familiar and because it was two slightly different sounds coming from the same area. It was very easy to tell where it was coming from. So I dunno, maybe you can fool some people with them. I had read about them before but never actually seen or owned one and I knew right away what it was.

YMMV but I was very underwhelmed and actually glad that I didn't buy one.

It can end up driving you crazy. The high pitched squeal is very hard to locate and it will take at least a day or two for someone to locate it.

The random interval at which is beeps makes it even harder to find.

I give the Annoy-A-tron an A+ for effectiveness
