I'm JUST a little too far to get DSL in the house I;m in now (moving into an apartment soon)..

The question I have is"

Do any apartments include the high-speed internet access with the rent? I would like to give it a shot if it
s VERY cheap or nearly free, I will make sure I get an apartment close enough to a DSLAM in case I do need to go to DSL.

I'm weary of paying 44.95/mo for RR. They SAY it's been bumped to 5MBps lately, but I see no real difference, I still very very rarely see more than 500k downloading.

Verizon? Don't believe the Sh!t on tv. I got a really slow connection at 185 dl and/40 up. You should ask your neighbor how fast their dsl before buying.

My dad has the same service (in a different city, though), and gets the full rated speed. We'll see how well they do at my place.

Piss me off :( full rated speed :( Can't wait for fios

My DSL is nice and speedy as well. Of course I'm dealing with Speakeasy/Covad over Verizon lines.

I was getting the full rated speed through Verizon DSL in my Oxnard (yo yo!) apartment complex.

I've just moved to Redondo Beach, and cable Internet is like $46 if I have cable TV service (which I don't). I decided to try out DSL again for $30. The first month is free and there's a 30-day trial period. If it's horrid, I can cancel it.

Trial period for jou?

yah i did that a couple years ago, and it was always saturated. and our complex had 3 T1 lines, each with their own price (20/mo, 40/mo, 80/mo). my friend was on the 20/mo and it was like dial up, literally. I was on the 40 line and it was like slow DSL. it was lame.

Cable > DSL

:p

Cable's not available at my apartment.

I used cable for 4 years. It was fast, but unreliable, and the provider put more and more restrictions on it's use.

I've been on DSL for about a year now, and it's almost as fast, has rock solid stability, and very few restrictions on it's use.

Same here... i was on cable for over 5 years, infact i was in the only beta test in Canada... absolutely loved it for first 4 years, i could count all the times it went down on my fingers, but the last couple of years, speeds weren't reliable, and eventually they cut my service for overusage. It only took a call back to them to re-activate my service, but when i asked what the bandwidth limit was, so i could better control my usage, they told me that was confidential information, and what i should do is cut my usage in half, and if i get cut off again (this time for a week), i should cut it back by another 50%.

Told them to fvck off that day, and been with DSL since, and it's been great... and i'm downloading well over 100GB a month, with consistent speeds. Not as fast as cable now, since they've upped the speeds to 5mpbs, but i have no problems with that.
