So, I ordered a Logitech G502 Proteus Core FPS gaming mouse

My razer mice have broken (3 over time) so I started searching and ran into the Logitech G502 Proteus Core FPS mouse.

My first thought is to wonder if the 12,000 DPI is turning into the megapixel war. Each razer mouse seemed better than the last, but my current one is 5600 DPI. (I believe around 4k, and 3k, were the ones before that) I have been a multiple display user for years and love fast scrolling to get from one side to the other quickly (in desktop mode).

I've use Logitech mice with the scroll button which you can just spin and let it go and I absolutely love that feature, it appears that this mouse has that. Since the polling hasn't improved in ages I wonder if they can improve everything else without having additional speed.

What I am not sure about is the size. Toms mentions it's not for large hands with palms, but is good for "claw" grips and it does appear smaller then my current lachesis.

My 2 use cases:
Multi display / general use
FPS twitch shooters (BF4 mainly atm)
Basically I want high precision and speed.

(yeah they are straight from the ad, I'm just mentioning what I think will matter to me)
What I like about the mouse specs :

  • Brand, therefore hopefully the drivers will be good and updated for Win9 etc.

  • 12,000 dpi

  • Choose whether you want click-to-click precision or hyper-fast scrolling.:thumbsup::thumbsup: (awesome for browsing!)

  • In game DPI shifting (nothing exclusive)

This sounds good:

  • Sleep mode disabled

Neutral:

  • Weight changing. I had a mouse with the option before but stock was fine, perhaps I should try it out.

What I don't know if I will use (perhaps it's my loss, I should at least try them out)

  • 11 programmable buttons

What do you guys think, was this a good decision? It was very spur of the moment, I was going to ask recommendations but I already got sold on this while reading up on it. :p

When buying a mouse the primary things an fps gamer should care about are a flawless sensor, fit and lightweight. These are the key attributes that determine if a mouse is good and will fit you.

Determine how you grip the mouse, then how big your hands are and then go about finding flawless mice for that grip and ideally get something sub 75g. This is what matters in mice, all the fancy marketing dribble with removable weights just costs you money and doesn't practically change the genuine performance of the mouse. You aren't ever going to use 12000dpi, in practice you will probably play with around 400 to 1200 natively. More than that and your down sampling to that sort of level. Most fps pros use about 30-35cm as a 360 spin in game. That works out to about 400 DPI.

Please just consider what is important and get a mouse based on sound attributes rather than marketing drivel.

Whilst those are good principles, do you have thoughts on this particular mouse, or whether there are better alternatives? Generally I tend to over-research things but it's somewhat hard to get concrete objective info on them and is highly susceptible to bias imo. According to Toms this was the best all around gaming mouse, one of the top contenders in the multiple categories (strictly FPS had a different choice).

I agree you can't really game in 12,000 DPI since the accuracy would be horrible, it's a nice extra in desktop mode (whether it's just the native resolution multiplied).

There isn't a single good review site on mice. About the best place to go is esreality.com's hardware forum. This includes quite a lot of mouse reviews and discussions looking specifically at the qualities of mice.

I have seen one credible report that the G502 has a flawless sensor, which in my world isn't enough reports to say it does. But its also really heavy, which is a big problem.

I have the G502 and think its amazing. I'm coming from a really heavy mouse, the G700, so this G502 is light for me and I'm really fast with it. I find the weight, grip, and responsiveness to be totally perfect. No way will you regret this thing. Congrats.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Trying to look at the specs it's very similar to my old mouse both in size and weight. It's actually a few grams lighter, but I don't know if that's with or without the adjustable weights.

I've got the G502 (warranty replacement for my G500S), and it's decent. I don't like the way it doesn't really show you the DPI mode you're in. However, i really like the new scroll wheel. The scroll lock button sticks at times, but it's not bad. It's a generally-decent mouse, but it's got that stupid mesh cable wrapping that ruined my 3 previous G-series mice, so we'll see how this goes.

It doesn't look like a fingertip mouse. I hate the term "claw grip" because it doesn't tell you anything about how you actually use the mouse and makes you sound like a brutish monster grabbing the mouse... If anything, the palm grip should be called "claw". If you had an actual claw you wouldn't have the dexterity to use your fingers so you'd just put your whole claw on it like a palm gripper and control it by flailing your whole arm like a lobster.

Edit: Wait, claw grip is a 3rd type in between palm and fingertip? http://www.epicgear.com/en/technologies/types-of-mouse-grip

I swapped from a Razer Naga Epic to the G502 and I'm loving it. Took a day or two to fully adjust but now when I don't use it I miss it a lot. Great fit, very smooth, love the hyper scroll for browsing the web, the on the fly dpi changing is awesome, and the mouse is very comfortable for longer gaming sessions.

I do mostly FPS games now with some SC2 from time to time. Works great for that. Highly recommend the mouse. It's nice to be back with Logitech. Never had an issue with their peripherals.

LOL dude haha. I think some people actually use the mouse that way. That's why they suck! (jk, but not really)

Here's my research/story of my quest for a new mouse:

One of the buttons on my old G9 mouse finally wore out late last year and I ended up buying a Logitech MX Performance because I found it for $60. It's a great mouse in terms of fit and performance for my grip. I was using it mainly at home till recently when I brought it into work where I now use it full time.

Without question, I'm in the market for a wired gaming mouse even though I don't get to game as much these days. I was toying with the idea of buying the Razer Naga for MMO/MOBA style games and the Corsair M65 for FPS games.

However, the G502 does seem like a great all around mouse that I may end up buying. My only concern is the size of the mouse because I have to use a slightly different grip on the G502 vs the MX Performance mouse which I find very comfortable. Also, I did try out the Razer Naga while I was at Best Buy the other day and I think it's even more comfortable than the MX Performance.

Ultimately, I think I'll get use to the G502 but it was definitely a little awkward when I was giving it a test run at Best Buy. I just wish it was a tad bigger. :(

Saragota - I'm curious about how comfortable it is during long gaming sessions. What's the longest session you've had so far with the mouse?

Longest session is 3-4 hours for gaming. Was doing some work before/after so about 6 hours of continued use. No issues whatsoever during the entire time. Very comfortable. Unfortunately I don't have the time for full day gaming sessions anymore but 3-4 hours some evenings are great.

I also have somewhat smaller hands and it fits perfectly. Added a couple weights and it feels great.

I use a G602 but the G502 looks amazing. I hope they keep that design motif and make a less expensive version (I don't need many of the bells and whistles the 502 offers) I would get a 50 dollar version though that simply has the great sensor without the surface-adaption stuff that probably is what makes the 502 more expensive.

I just recently got the G502. It's AMAZING. I had been loving the MS Sidewinder for 7 years (original not those shitty X versions), but I wanted more buttons. It's hard to find a mouse that fits like the sidewinder though : (

I ordered a naga 2014, but then before it arrived I went to a bestbuy and actually held the mice (why I didn't do this before I don't know). It's smaller and a little different from the sidewinder, but it still fit my hand well and has that feel of offset buttons that make it really easy to hit them in succession. Note: I have somewhat weird tastes I think; you should really go into best buy and feel mice for yourself.

I'm not a mouse snob, but even I can tell the sensor is WAY better than my previous mouse although how it stacks up to every other mouse I can't be sure. The research I did on overclock and whatnot seemed to indicate it's one of the best though.
