So I open the new Dell catalog and discover than JVC is selling Harddrive based Camcorders

What? The only problem I see is that HDD cameras suck right now. Hopefully the technology improves. Why would you prefer tape?? Do you still use a film still camera?

4.5 to 7 hours of max quality video. Pretty small little suckers too. Been out for awhile not, to bad they suck compared to any good camcorders. I wish Sony/Canon/Panasonic would make some HD based camcorders.

Why not? 😕

Vibration.

The buffer on that thing must be massive.

People have been building PCs into cars for years, without special mounts for the HD - I'd imagine these would/will work just fine. 🙂

Removablle cheap DV tapes that hold the equivalent of 13GB are still the best option.

What if you want to Film for a long time? This thing requires you to have a PC nearby.

If Im not mistaken these HD's are flash based, as opposed to mechanical. So its like whats inside an IPOD, if Im not mistaken.

Every HD mp3 player skips. In that case, you are talking about a maximum of 1Mbit/s (lossless)

Jsut imagine creating a a 5min buffer for 25Mbps DV video

I doubt it. The price for 30GB of flash would be astronomical

Hrmm, you may be right. Anyone wanna find out for sure, Im to lazy.

I have the older version, the one with the removable 4 gig ibm micro drive. It works great and the video quality is amazing. Battery life lasts about 1 hour. You can record 1 hour on super high quality.

the down side is that it doesn't capture anything in low light, gets kinda hot after an hour of recording, and still pictures aren't that great. It also records in MOD files which only Cyberlink Power Director software seems to be able to recgonize. $14 shipped for OEM version 4 on ebay or $89 for the retail newest version. The version that came with the camera is enough to convert it into avi, mpeg-1 or -2 files so you can edit it in another program.

I bought mine because I got an amazing deal on it and I needed a new camera at the time.

No, not just the HD based head units, but actual computers. In my experience, I rarely hear any skipping at all. When I do, its because I'm doing too much to it (like on a real computer) playing games or doing stuff that would make a computer at home skip.
