note: if you get black make sure you keep a lint brush in the pocket cuz it looks horrible if you don't keep it clean and it picks up lint like a mofo

Sadly, the bluefly link is out of medium. I shall keep looking, maybe go shoipping in a couple of days - the jcrew link on the first coat has my size but the peacoat is only XL+

So I ended up buying this one. It was a close, close decision between this one and the single-breasted 'clo' jacket linked off this page - but I think it's a nice coat, and $170 seems like a reasonable price. Thanks for your advice, guys. I decided against the jcrew link because it was clearance and no returns, and I wasn't sure how well the 'heather chestnut' would look in their university coat style

You don't need a coat for those temperatures. Get a nylon windbreaker about 2 sizes too large and a normal-sized thin fleece jacket. Wear both (fleece inside the windbreaker). That'll be good down to around 10F and won't be anywhere near as bulky as a 1-piece jacket. Below about 10F, I have to replace the thin fleece jacket with the lining from my parka but I still wear the windbreaker. I almost never wear my full parka these days.

Columbia Jacket with the removable fleece liner. Got mine for ~$100, but they can be found for better prices. I use the outer shell for warmer days (30F and up) I use both for everything else, and it's a very warm jacket. It has kept me warm on -5F weather.

For upper 20s I often go out in shorts & a T-shirt... but that's just me.

:thumbsup: Well fitted thermals (I have plain-jane cotton ones, they have [nicer] microflece ones nowadays) will go a long way in keeping you warm without having to have an unecessarily bulky jacket/sweater and what have you.
