Well, I'm 24 (jan. 25th at least). I'm still not in my career...I have my basics out of the way.

I thought at first that I wanted to be in computer programming, but then switched to Radiology Technician, and then to systems administrator. I just recently got my A+ and NET+...but now I'm thinking I want to go back into Radiology. I Just don't know people.

What're some good career paths where i'd make a decent income ($50,000+) and work a normal day shift. I would prefer to be in an office/cubicle and...actually would prefer to have enough to keep me busy. I was thinking about a paralegal possibly..something to do w/ law??

Seriously...any suggestions i'll look into, i'm at the point in my life where I REALLY need to buckle down and get on a ball ya know?? Other-wise i'll be stuck at dead-end jobs forever. =/

Dude, you want to be my secretary? Patent secretaries make a good living (especially if they are competent), and you will have more work than you can imagine to fill up your day. Best thing about it is that the job is generally a 9 to 5.

It seems like all of those you listed are not just 9-5. Not sure there are too many of those kind of jobs out there. Today everyone expects you to work once you get home because you have access.

That was going to be my course of a career path, do you work in a hospital or a private facility?

Do you ever have to work around injured or sick patients?

what is the context of your job responsibilities?

I'm a patent lawyer. Trust me, if you want to do patent prosecution, go to law school. Patent agents do very similar (though not quite the same) work as a patent lawyer involved in proseuction work, but get paid ~60% of a patent lawyer's salary. In addition, there is NO upside to being a career patent agent. That is, you will do the same thing on day 1 that you do when you retire, and your salary will be capped at ~90k.

A couple other suggestions you might not have thought of: 1) Dentist (work 3 days a week and make 200k) ; 2) Pharmacist (huge demand, work anywhere you want, 8 hour fixed days, good salary and great benefits).

I always tell people to first decide what you want to do with your life.
Do you want to have a family ?
Do you want something that just makes you money or something that takes some of your free time ?

I seperate the two with, the job you go to work , you clock in , you clock out, you come home and leave work behind.

The other you go to work, you come home, you have to answer the phone, might be work, you may have to go in when you don't want to, always on call, etc. May have to spend time at home working on things from work.

I did the last one.
Became a Electrical Engineer.
Loved electronics so thought that would be right for me.
found out I loved it as a hobby, but hated it when I couldn't work on what I wanted and had to bring work home with me.

Switched careers to computer graphics.
Pays about half what the engineering job did, but I'm happy .
Money isn't everything :)

I appreciate the advice from everyone so far. I want a good career...but I don't want something that i'm going to have to go to school for the next 10yrs to get to. I would love to do this (like pharmacy) but...i'm already 24...I have to fend for myself, so...there's no way I could work and go to school for that.
I need something that'll do decent w/ a BA at max. Possibly a Masters later on down the road.
I really just want something that would be stable work...and would get me around $50k/yr. I'm not worried about making a whole lot more (altho around $100k would be nice eventually). I just want to live comfortably...not own ferrari's and what-not. ^_^

See if you school offers a ROTC program with the air force. Be an officer, in 3 years you'll be making close to 60k (base pay and allowances) and be doing mostly paperwork :laugh:

Do you have any sort of Bachelors degree? From the sound of it you started various certification type courses, but not actual university courses. I ask because if you don't have a degree, you want a comfy job with comfy hours, and you want to make $50,000 . . . well see that just may not be reality there. Okay granted there will be a few nimrod people here on ATOT that say you can easily score a job that pays $50,000 without any sort of prior experience/schooling but that would have to be either falsehood or anecdotal evidence at best.

I suppose maybe IT would fit that bill, but aren't IT guys like a dime a dozen now? Can somebody enter into the IT field (outside of high cost of living locations) and score $50k/year with no experience?

Electrician. Journeyman wages can be as high as $35+/hour, and while you're an apprentice you make 40%, 50%, 55%, 60% of Journeyman's wage until you're licensed. Go look at some job listings and see the demand out there for electricians--you're never going to be out of work.

I hope someone doesn't shoot me down because this is my backup plan if I decide to be a normal 9-5er (I'm a lib arts major so my degree is useless).

Actually...I have my 'basics' out of the way as far as college goes (after that i started work full time to support the wife) and I'm not asking for a comfy job where i make $50k/yr w/o a degree. ^_^ I'm looking into going back to school to get a BA, I just don't know which field I really want to go into.

Yea...i've thought about electricians, i know they make really good money. Not sure that i'd want to do that type of work for a living, but it has crossed my mind.

Rodeo clowns make good money and get to travel and don't work very hard. Plus the education you have will probably be enough.

I used to be the IT director at my hospital, but changed positions to a PACS Administrator beginning this week.

There are definately benefits for working in a hospital and some drawbacks, but it's a solid and stable job.

I have not had to touch any patient, nor will I since I'm not qualified nor certified to do so.

email me if you have any other questions. michael_ chang@chs.net
